Where's the built in microphone?

#1 Post by nikki_g » Wed Nov 10, 2004 12:48 pm

Hi! I have a Thinkpad T41... I was wondering if this model has a built-in microphone for recording, and if so, where is it?

Thanks!

Not sure if the t41 has it, but probably, look right above your escape key. There should be two little holes there, that's the mic.

Woah. I have a T42, and I always wondered about those holes. I always figured it was a mic, but forgot about them until this thread. Now I'll have to mess with it and see if it works.

Thanks for the tip!

I always use it for internet telephony. It was very nice to discover that I just had to install the software and could start talking!
I was actually in bed, and didn't really feel like getting up to get any equipment, but it's all there already, and thanks to the speakers pointed down and away from the far away located microphone also with almost no feedback... Really excellent design by IBM!

I've enjoyed the mic as well -- and all the more with the "noise reduction" check box selected in the SoundMAX utility.

What program do you use for Internet Telephony, just out of curiosity?

I use Skype:
http://www.skype.com/

It's free and I really like it. Plus you can call almost anywhere on the world to the normal phone lines for the local calling price. It also has instant messaging.
No video yet, though.

The mic is one good thing and has a good quality,
but what is with the mixer???
When you want to record something over "line in" the signal goes through mic, microphone is still on and you got the noise of it in your recording.
I wonder about that from the first day the T4x series comes out (T2x had two Inserts)
I pass around that with an usb-device, but it is still annoying though.
Or do I missed something on that ??

think, check the volume settings. Go Options-Properties and check the recording option box. Check the box at Microphone, then OK.

Now you should see the mixer controls for recording, there you can make further adjustments for recording.

As for Skype, they are constantly improving, but I still miss the Group chat when doing conference calls (amongst other things). But I am never completely happy with what I have...

Yes, Elhabash, thank you. But the point is, when you want to record something over the "line in" input next to the line out on the left of your Tp (not the build in mic), the signal even though appears in the microphone line and you get the microphone signal in your recording too, because the microphone is still on.
A normal behavior would be that the build in microphone goes to the Microphone channel in mixer and the line in has to show his signal in the Line In channel of the mixer. So both signals go through the mic channel. The Line In channel has no use! Moreover the Line In has an microphone pre amp so every normal signal that you send through Line In into your Thinkpad is distorted (except microphone signals which need the pre amp).
The T20 series had two Inputs on the left side: one for the external microphone (pre amped) and one for a normal Line In signal which appeared in the Line In channel of the mixer.
That looks for me as something that not should be and it is not very professional, I didn´t tried it out on my new 42p, but I suppose it has not changed.
But as I don´t have infinite insight and knowledge there is maybe a (simple) ploy to just send it the right way, or to mute the build in mic and deactivate the pre amp when recording.

Maybe it´s better to make a new Topic of it, but it just fell in my mind when I saw this one.

thanks everybody
