Ultrabay Hard Drive Adapter for T43

#1 Post by kidpaprika » Tue Nov 06, 2007 12:31 pm

Hi

I'd like to increase data storage on my T43 by as much as possible without resorting to an external USB hard drive enclosure that I have to carry around everywhere.

Originally I'd wanted to fit a new 160GB or 200GB drive internally, but now I've read about all the issues surrounding hard drive compatibility with the T43 I've been scared off this idea. I'm now thinking of getting hold of an Ultrabay Hard Drive adapter for my T43 and fitting a large capacity hard drive into that to use as a second (data) drive.

My questions are:

1. Does the Ultrabay adapter protrude from the Thinkpad or does it fit in neatly like the Ultrabay DVD ROM? If it does protrude, how much does it stick out? Does anyone have any links to any photos of the Ultrabay HDD adapter actually sitting in a Thinkpad? I can't find any on Google Images.
2. What hard drives are compatible with the Ultrabay/T43? What's the largest capacity I can go for?
3. Will I notice any difference in performance between an Ultrabay fitted HDD and a standard internal HDD when accessing data?

Thanks!

1. No it doesn't stick out, it looks exactly like the DVD without the blue button.
2. 2,5" wide 9mm height P-ATA - refer to your orther post re size.
3. no not really, but don't buy a drive with 4200 rpm.

Does that mean that any 2.5" wide 9mm height P-ATA will work in the Ultrabay with the T43, or are there compatibility issues as with the internal drive?

Yes any PATA drive will work in the Ultrabay without having any compatibility issue
