Where to find the Network Controller

#1 Post by fkelly » Wed Nov 07, 2007 9:57 pm

I just picked up a T42, did a fresh install of XP and everything seems to go fine, but,,

1. What is and where can I find the drivers for the Network Controller (its got the big yellow ?mark under other devices). And it prompts at startup that I need it.

2. I can't seem to get wireless working (is it because I need this Net Controller).....I downloaded the drivers for the Intel Pro 1000 card.

3. Lastly I am supposed to have a 60GB 7200 HD. I see it's 60GB but how do I determine whether it is 5400/7200 etc.

4. I did download the access connections but would like to connect via Windows, but not quite sure how to do that. I know to uninstall ac but what steps do I need to set up Win.

Thanks in advance, for assistance.....

If the IBM/Lenovo software is still installed, you can find out which components are in your T42 by pressing the Access IBM button. If not, you need the Hotkey Utility and Access IBM Help installed for this to work. You can also get that info from the following page.

Parts lookup

To get your device drivers, go to the following page. It is almost always best to use the IBM/Lenovo supplied drivers. Be sure and follow the installation instructions for a successful install.

See the above link for WiFi card drivers. You need to determine what WiFi card you have installed.

Look at the drive entry in the Windows Device Manager. It should show a brand and type number. Do a Google search on that information to see the specifications of the drive.

OK, Now I see, the Pro/Intel is the ethernet adapter. How do I determine what card I have, do I need to open up the unit?

You may well have to do that, but first put the full 7 digit model number of your T42 into the QuickPath lookup function on the Lenovo - Support - Downloads & drivers web page, and see what type of WiFi card was fitted as original equipment for your T42, and then try installing the driver for that card.

If it doesn't load, you will need to take a physical look at the card.

The T42 comes with the following possible wireless adapters (unless someone changed it for something else). You will need one of the 5 listed drivers below.

1. Cisco Wireless LAN mini PCI adapter
2. IBM ThinkPad 802.11bg wireless LAN Mini PCI adapter
3. IBM ThinkPad Dual-Band ab and 802.11abg wireless LAN Mini PCI adapter
4. Intel PRO/Wireless LAN 2100 3b Mini PCI adapter
5. Intel PRO/Wireless 2200bg, 2915abg, 3945bg, 3945abg, 4965ag, 4965agn Mini PCI adapter

Try this link to see which card you have. Click on the link "System Details" in the following web page. Product information

I wrote the following before I saw the page above.
Most likely you have the Intel 2200bg (IMO). Did you try the parts lookup page I linked to above? If you don't have the serial number handy, you can enter your product number (i.e. 2378-5UU) in the Quick path on the right side of the page, and click on Go. The next page will have a description of your model and the parts it came with. Once you have that information, you can download and install the appropriate driver. If you can't even find the product number (it should be listed on the sticker on the bottom of the T42), you can try installing each driver until one seems to install properly.

One other thing. If you have Access Connections installed, be sure and uninstall it before installing your wireless driver. You can reinstall it again afterwards if you like.

Any drivers you download, have to be run, to extract their contents to your hard drive, then you have to execute the setup program to actually install the driver. Finally you have to reboot after the driver is installed. See installation instructions on the download page for details.

93P3482 93P3483 INTEL PRO WIRELESS 802.11B/G MINI-PCI AD.

This is what is supposed to be in........

Ok, I will download this driver which I am assuming is #2 on the list u provided.

Once downloaded, could you give me a step by step to where I need to install it. I have been trying to install in that Network controller but doesn't do anything.

I am not seeing any PCI adapter to install it in.

NO!

The Intel 2200bg is what you have. That is number 5 on the list. You want the following driver. Intel PRO 2200bg, 2915abg, 3945bg, 3945abg, 4965ag, and 4965agn Mini PCI adapter wireless software for Windows XP, 2000 - ThinkPad

The README on the same page has all the installation instructions. Basically, after you download the file, double-click on it to extract it's contents to your hard drive. Then go to C:\DRIVERS\WIN\WLANINT2\XP\Apps\x32\ and double-click on iProInst.EXE
