Problem After LCD Replacement
I just replaced a cracked SXGA lcd panel with a new XGA panel I got off ebay. I didn't realize the cable for the SXGA and the XGA panels are different until after I purchased the new screen. I downgraded to an XGA display because it is cheaper and I am fixing the laptop for a friend. I put the new panel in and tested the laptop out to see if the SXGA cable would work but the laptop only turns on for 2-3 seconds and then shuts off. It will not turn back on unless I unplug the power cable and then plug it back in and then it only turns on for 2-3 seconds again. I thought maybe the problem was the incorrect cable so I put the old panel back in but the same thing happens. I'm at a loss for what could be wrong with it. Thanks for any help you can offer.

I am pretty sure I saw another thread similar to yours in this forum not too long ago. I am afraid you have fried your motherboard using the wrong cable with that display.

Yikes! If frying a motherboard is really the outcome of using the wrong cable during an LCD swap, we might need a sticky in this forum with some helpful tips and procedures.
Please keep us up to date on that machine -- and good luck!

You missed the point of my question, was the screen you got intended for an ibm do the part numbers correlate ?
I have in the past put a screen out of a dell into a ibm and fried the im board because the pn outs were different.
The screen in question was a sxga panel.
Also if you connect the base unit to an external monitor and set it t boot to the external monitor only you will find the laptop boots..

Here is an update. I got the laptop back from IBM and they replaced the motherboard under warranty. During that time, I purchased an xga display cable off ebay. I installed the new lcd panel last night with the xga cable and everything works great now. It does look like the sxga cable with the xga panel caused the motherboard to kick the bucket. I won't be making that mistake again. Thanks for your help guys.
I have to add that once I installed a SXGA TFT 14.1 screen on a T42 that had a XGA TFT 14.1 screen, it didnt fry but the image was obviously garbled.
Maybe you had bad luck. Luckly IBM changed the systemboard for you (honestly is the best policy eh?
