T42p Memory upgrade - Price diff Help

#1 Post by banix88 » Sat Nov 13, 2004 3:06 am

I am looking to order one of the T42 express models (2379R9U) from the IBM website, and the base memory is 512mb... I would like to upgrade to 1GB... The configuration options allow me to upgrade to 1GB for $200... However i noticed that if i buy 512mb single t-series Dimm as a separate accessory it costs $159... So i have a couple of questions

1. Can i assume that the base configuration is going to be 1 single 512mb dimm and not 2 X 256mb dimms... so i know there is 1 free slot?
2. Is the memory configuration in the T42, dual channel... in other words to take advantage of it... do i need to have both memory modules of the same type (ibm t-series bulk)... or can i add in another manufacturers 512mb dimm?

(I know its only $40 difference - but every little bit helps)

According to the IBM website, yes it should come with one slot free. If I was you, I'd get it with the one stick and then go to Crucial.com and get their (which is micron) 512 stick for $107 with free shipping. IBM memory is way overpriced and crucial is guaranteed to work or your money back.

Why don't you just get it from Bill, he could prob get you a 1GB RAM for cheaper than what you'd pay for the notebook with the crucial ram.

You're basically paying more b/c IBM is installing it for you.. like it's really that hard to install more ram.
