Distorting speakers on T42 (& a couple of other things!)

#1 Post by NiceCupOfTea » Mon Nov 19, 2007 8:16 pm

Hi folks,

Recently bought a refurbished T42, very impressed with it.

Only real fly in the ointment is the sound. I wasn't expecting much from laptop speakers, but they distort really badly at even low volumes.

Before I take it apart, how easy to get at are the speakers? Easily replaceable? Anything obvious that might rattle in the case?

A couple of other slight annoyances - there is crack in the case on the wrist rest bit, just on the edge in the middle between and behind the trackpad keys (if that makes sense). How easy is this bit to replace if I can find one on ebay?

Only other thing is that occasionally I get a white pixel on the display. It goes away after a bit, but I think it's a different one each time. Anything to worry about?

Cheers!

THe speakers are held in from below by 2 10mm screws, in the front-middle (not the ones under the screw covers in the very front. You need to remove the keyboard and palmrest. The procedure is different, depending on whether you have a 14" or 15" screen. In either case. you can find the parts on eBay. It is harder to find 15" palmrests. It is also harder if you have a fingerprint reader. The speakers are not great anyway. The only tool you need is a good phillips screwdriver, size 00. Here is a link to the service manual:

Hey there NiceCupOfTea,

I noticed you were from London & I wanted to see how you got on with the bits. I've got a few spares parts for the t42's that are in very good condition. Just wonder if you found the replacement parts you require & if not pm me & i'll give ya some details.

Cheers.

my thinkpad had distorted sound too when playing music with windows media player...
the clue is that my undervolt- voltage isn't stable in NHC, because i have never test the stability of low voltage using Prime95, until i test it and find the stable range, therefore, the distorted sound is then gone forever
