[T41] Has anyone tried to play games? How well does it do?
[T41] Has anyone tried to play games? How well does it do?
Hi all,
Please let me know if this is an inappropriate place to ask this question...
I use Linux on my proper workstation at home, but have recently decided to try a few (moderately old) games on my work laptop.
My Thinkpad has 512Mb of Ram, a 1.7GHz CPU, and a Mobility Radeon 9000, as far as I know.
So far, I've committed to buy Thief 1 & 2, and Rollcage Stage 2. Also 'No One Lives Forever 1 & 2'. Second-hand games are cheap on eBay! Also, my girlfriend wants to try Unreal Tournament again - we played UT2003 at University a few years ago.
Now, to my question:
Does anyone have experience of playing this generation of game on a T41? I'm not expecting much, but I think it should play some of these games adequately?
Could it handle UT2003? How about UT2004?
I'm really not a serious gamer - I'd just like to get a passable refresh rate.
Thanks,
Michael

I have an ThinkPad T40 (for specs look at signature).
I play games like:
Call of Duty 1
Call of Duty 2
GTA: Vice City
Need For Speed Underground 2
Need for Speed Most wanted
GTA: San Andreas.
UT2003
UT2004
Trackmania Nations ESWC
I can play this games fine on low settings with my ATi Radeon 7500 (32MB)
You have an Radeon 9000, so maybe you can set the graphics settings in games a little bit higher.

Thanks for the speedy reply!
I'll play with the settings when the games turn up. What sort of screen resolutions can you manage to use on UT?
I'll commit to buy UT2003 & UT2004 as well now I've heard the good news!
I am going to have to clear some disc space though... I have a 60Gb drive, but it's almost full with CD images, firmware updates, and manuals for work.
Thanks,
Michael

I reinstalled my laptop last weekend, so i can't look it up right now, but i believe it was 800*600 or 1024*768, with settings on "Low" or "Medium".
There are also demo's avaible of UT2003 and UT2004, you can always try these, before you buy the full version
And for extra storage, look for an external harddisk, they aren't much expensive these days, i have a 320GB disk that costed €90 euros, and it is connected trough USB.

Mobility Radeon 9000 is a Directx 8.1 open gl 2.0 gpu, so you can play fine on it unless the game is Directx9 or better.
UT2003 and UT2004 run fine on it.
Remember to update to latest video driver (Version 8.133.2.1.1.1-070206a-043154C Issue date August 31, 2007)
Good luck
