i think, if we could get some good Linux coders with thinkpads (Bill giving them away was seriously wishful thinking...), then this could develop into yet another distro, except specific to Thinkpads.

Of course, it would have to be based on another distro, because starting from scratch is way too much work. I think the best ones to use as a base would be either Ubuntu/Kubuntu (one is for Gnome and one is for KDE), Fedora Core 4 (when it is officially released), or SuSE (do they allow 'latch on' distros? not sure...)

IMO From what i've seen in online forums, etc... a large number of laptop linux users are running thinkpads.

If anyone else thinks this should be done, i could put out a general bulliten in a few linux forums and see if any coders would volunteer their time
:)

over at the x1000 forum (x1000forums.com) there is a project that creates specified gentoo version for x1000 and most of its clones machines. They have to version 3 and I tried it and liked it....

http://x1000.bitbuilder.com/

I think if a person has skills, this can be done easily. I personally like gentoo and its easiness.

personaly, i think that Gentoo, although a terrific distro, would not really be suitable for this platform. It really isn't user-freindly enough for this user market. As far as i can see.. some of the people buying/using this distro/TPs from Bill would be geeks who ae interested in the bleeding edge, but the majority would probably be home linux users who don't want to go through the hassle of getting their TPs linuxified.

OK, i'll post in a few forums about it :)

(i did a bit more research, and i am now thinking that Debian based or Distro Based on Debian based... just IMO)

There is no need to create the whole distro just for a thinkpad, all that is needed is installer, which can identify a model and do a proper setup. It should include specific thinkpad drivers (trackpad) and utilities, the rest can go on as usual setup. This can easily be done with debian and is not that much work. If there is interest, shout.

solaris 10 i386 on T42p

#113 Post by jcypher » Fri Sep 02, 2005 8:37 pm

I just installed solaris 10 for i386 on my Thinkpad T42p using the free dvd download from sun.com. It mostly works great.

Here's the pros:
It recognizes all my RAM (2GB)
Their free update manager works dandy, although I wish it had more detailed info about each patch, along with links to more info at sun.com.
The CDE and Java desktop environments run fine even at 1600x1200.
The companion cd and those utils are quite handy (gcc etc)
USB mass storage (like flash drives) works fine.
Sound works (although a bit choppy, I need to find a better driver).
Gig ethernet card builtin was recognized and works fine.

Now here's the cons:
Builtin wireless intel ipw2200 wasn't recognized.
Builtin bluetooth wasn't recognized.
battery status applet was not included.
DVD player won't play movies (yet -- I'll keep working on this one).
VMWare won't work. (I still need XP or Linux to do this).
ipf doesn't yet work properly (at least not easily).
numerous unnecessary services (for a laptop, anyway) were enabled by default.

You may want to refer to these guys: http://www.epios.net/

They created a distro for the VIA EPIA line of motherboards... IIRC, it's Debian-based, but everything's been optimized for the VIA C3 instead of i586 (because the EPIAs run C3s, which need all the optimization you can get to compete with a P3 at half the clock speed...)

I think IBM has an internal Linux distro where everything works.

I have used Mandrake 10.1 and managed to configure the wireless, thinkpad buttons, standby, CPU throttling etc.
