T40 WLAN options?

#1 Post by jiopsi » Tue Nov 20, 2007 7:33 pm

Does T40 (2373) support any WLAN miniPCI adapter or is there restrictions? Was thinkin to change my 2100 3B adapter to faster, and maybe gain some batterytime also.

2100 3B 11Mbs
transmit, receive, idle, sleep
1.6w-1.0w-135mw-45mw

There are restrictions, but you can get around them.

An IBM branded card would work with no hassles. People like to get the Atheros one around here (called IBM a/b/g). It's definitely faster than the Intel card, but it uses more power.

How can I get around them? Have seen g-cards like 1w-0.8w characteristics, and distance isn't so important.

It depends on the card and the error you get when you boot the machine with it installed. Generally you have to patch the Thinkpad BIOS for non-IBM cards to 'white list' them. Try a forum search for no-1802 and you'll get an idea of what I'm talking about. Some cards won't boot at all. There is no fix for that.

The fastest you can go to in a miniPCI format card is 802.11g.

The IBM OEM versions of the Intel 2200BG and 2915ABG cards will both work well on a straightforward plug and play basis and come up fairly often on the second hand market nowadays at modest prices.

Cheers,

I'd steer clear of the later mini PCI cards (designed for the T43) - I had some difficulties with Fn F5 after upgrading my 2100B card to the atheros a/b/g card (yes, I tried everything suggested on this forum). The earlier a/b/g and a/b/g II cards should work just fine. And definitely get an IBM card unless you like hacking hardware - sure, it's easy enough to do until you make a mistake!
