How to work with an esternal monitor with the notebook close

Sorry if this is a dummy question but i need to work with an external monitor closing the T40 monitor.....if i do it now the notebook goes in suspension mode...how manage it?

If you are using Windows XP you can change the Power Options Properties in control panel under the advanced tab to do nothing when you close the lid of your portable computer.

This should do what you ask.

The other obvious answer would be to power up with the lid closed or just switch to the external monitor with the FN-F7 key combo.
