Problem running Dothan 765 in a T41P

#1 Post by Likvid » Wed Nov 28, 2007 9:57 am

I have some strange problems after installing the Dothan 765 2.1GHZ CPU in my T41P.

At first it boots into XP and then the screen goes blank, the second time the laptop freezes when it boots.

The third time the laptop doesn't even start and just beeps one long beep and two short beeps.

After shuting it down and off several times it boots again.

I have now changed back to my old Banias 1.7GHz CPU and it works as i am writing this message.

What could be wrong? i thought the Pentiium M Dothan 2.1GHz could be run in the T41P?

Is there any special BIOS version i need as i got the latest from IBM.

Appreciate any input....

Did you install the cooling correctly? You have to use coolpaste between the processor and cooling part. If you didn't do this, the processor may be overheating, and your laptop is acting weird.

Yes i did apply new paste on the cpu in a thin layer.

Looked up the hardware maintenance manual and one long beep and two short beeps refer to system board problems.

But it can't be system board problems as the old CPU works perfectly.

It seems to work now.

I downgraded from BIOS 3.23 to 3.21 and i applied som coolingpaste on the heatsink as well.

I have built many PCs myself and never added to the heatsink any paste as it used to cool enough or maybe it was something else.

At least it works now :D

Very interesting and powerful upgrade (which, by the way, I hope your fan will support without running too hot/loud!) - congratulations!

For other users becoming inspired by your success, I believe it would be useful if you could provide the exact specifications about the CPU (model) you upgraded to; was it e.g. a SL7UZ or SL7V3 with "B1" stepping?

There is a great deal of information on this forum about upgrading CPU's (from the original Banias) in T41p's to Dothans, and if other readers become inspired by Likvid but want to prepare themselves for such an advanced upgrade, the following threads could probably be useful:

Can you put a 1.7 Dothan in a T40 with a 1.3 Banias?

I have just upgraded my t40 from p-m 1.3g to dothan 1.8g

It's a SL7V3 and B1 stepping.

NHC is reporting 53 Celsius right now from the CPU and everything is stable, i ran 3DMark06 and it passed with no freeze.

However the fan is running more than the previous CPU but i don't mind the fan noise.

I also upgraded from 512MB to 2GB Corsair.

It's like a new laptop now. :D

My fan started making strange noises so i ordered a new one from IBM.

The new one i got is much more silent when running, it kicks in at 60 degrees CPU, now running at 53 degrees CPU temp.

Really nice.

I also installed Vista Ultimate with Aero theme, and it's really fast, i was scared about it being too much resource hungry but my hardware seems to be enough for it.
