You have a choice of getting the
40Y8622 - see more information about this drive and other alternatives in the threads:
chosing a multiburner for T42 which is pointing to
Swapping T60 Multiburner w/ T42 DVD/CDRW. More info in
Best (cheapest/fastest) DVD-RW for T42? and
Soldering connections to the UJ-832.
CD/DVD-drives with a flat bezel are intended for T60's, whereas CD/DVD-drives designed for T42's have a
curved bezel.
I am able to watch DVD-movies (on T42/T42p's) with the "CD-ROM drive speed" set to "silent" [either in the BIOS or through the "ThinkPad Configuration" program] on a 40Y8622 without any troubles - I have never needed to copy anything to the harddisk.
Best regards,
Johan
