T40P Motherboards

#1 Post by m4martin » Wed Nov 28, 2007 4:52 pm

Hi All,

First thanks to Bill for great forum!

I have a T40P (14.1"Screen) 2373-G2G.
It seems to have a graphics card failing (loose GPU probably).

My question is which motherboards fit in the case?

I believe that the motherboards have a removable circuit extension to allow the CD drive to reach when fitted in the case for the 15" Screen version.

If the motherboards fit from a T41,42 or 43, then which motherboard from each model has the best graphics card to suit the hi-res monitor in the T40P?

Thanks
Martin
Best Regards
Martin.

Any T40, T41, T42 series board from a 14 or 15 inch computer will fit. Get a T42/p if you can as it will be newest. Failing that, a T41 as it has the the faster memory bus speed and the HDD protection circuitry. At T40 will be OK but they are all at least 4 years old now.

Thanks Keith,

If i look out for a T42, is ther a specific graphics chip to search for, and do you know any part numbers or FRU for the mobo?

Also, really fast reply, i only made the post about 3mins ago! WOW.

Thanks

Any of the motherboards will drive the SXGA+ screen, even the basic one. It would be easier to give helpful advice if you indicated what kind of things you did with your computer. If you do email and word processing, your graphics requirements are different from your needs if you do video editing or play games.

For future reference, the circuit extension you talk about is used to reach the optical bay and is called an interposer.

The screen is the standard 14" T40P which is, i think a UXGA? although it could be a SXGA, if i remember correctly i think it runs approx 1400x1050?

I mainly use the machine for CAD/CAM graphics, as i am a precision engineer. (Computer Aided Drafting/Computer Aided Manufacture) as i presume you know already.

Hence, Graphics Power, Screen Resolution, and Processing Power are all important factors.

I wonder if I can change the CPU too?

Thanks

All the T40p screens are SXGA+. (1400 X 1050) It is my understanding that the differences among the screens relate to the speed of rendition, rather than what is being displayed. You will not notice a difference if you vie static graphics, but full-speed-motion taxes all the GPUs, but will do better with the high-performance models. Yes, you can certainly change the CPU. If you get one of the better T42/p boards, you are also better off replacing the fan with an M10 model. (pink pad, rather than black pad).

Thank you Richk,

I will start a search for the T42/P motherboard and Long Fan.

To be honest I don't know a good place to search, as eBay in UK has none at the moment. Any ideas on a good source for one?

Thanks

Often I have them (and I do ship to Europe), but I don't have any right now. You might try Dimitri, who posts here. Here is a link to his eBay store:

My personal favorite is the ATI 9600. Try the Marketplace on this forum. There are some hard-luck stories from e-bay buyers buying T42 motherboards with 9600/Fire GPUs and getting T40 mobos with the 7500 GPU!

:(

Hi Keith,

I have posted a Wanted in the marketplace, having searched ebay-uk with no success.

I wonder if i should look for a t43 mobo, but i don't know if it fits or what the advantage is ?

Anyway, thanks to all you guys that posted, for your help.

Much appreciated!

A T43 system board will work, but you'd also have to replace the PC Card Slot cage, RAM, and CPU. Not very cost effective unless you have those parts available.

this happens alot in australia where they advertise t42 machines
with ati7500 graphics, instead of ati 9600 as assumed norm.
