Can't build/configure the T42 that I want :(

#1 Post by DentdHalo » Sun Nov 14, 2004 10:39 pm

This is what I want in my T42

765 2.1 GHz Dothan Chip
Biometric finger print reader <- A MUST!!
only the 64MB 9600 ATI card, dont need the FireGL 128MB one.
60GB 7200RPM, is there an 80 7200RPM option?
a/b/g +bluetooth wireless options
15" monitor flexview
XP Pro w/ SP2 default

is this possible? I cant build this on the US IBM web page. I really really want this configuration.

If it makes any difference, I am also currently living in Tokyo, but am from Canada. So I can either get this here in Tokyo (ill just remove the japanese OS and replace with an english keyboard later) or in Canada or order it from the states and have it delivered either to Tokyo or Canada.

Any thoughts?

Is this configuration not possible, or do i just need to talk with an IBM sales rep on the phone to get this config?

Okay, you are basically asking for a top of the line IBM which means you are going to get an ATI FireGL whether you want it or not. Just learn to deal with that, its the way its going to be pretty much without question. So, proceding with an open mind, check out this:

Model 2373-Q1U
Processor: Pentium M 765 2.1
Memory: 1GB
Screen: 15.0” UXGA
Graphics Controller: FireGL 128MB
Hard Drive: 60GB, 7200RPM
Optical Drive: DVD-RW
Wireless: IBM 11a/b/g II
Modem/Bluetooth
Fingerprint Reader
Battery Life: ~5.3 hr
Available Date: October 2004

As a note, if you were willing to live without the 2.1GHz CPU you could save a TON of money. The 2373-Q1U above lists for $4300. If you could live with a P4 1.8. For instance, the 2373-N1U costs $2779 and has the folllowing specs:
CPU: Pentium M 745 1.8
Memory: 512MB
Display: 15.0” SXGA+
Graphics Controller: 9600 64MB
Hard Drive: 80GB 5400RPM
Wireless: Combo IBM 11a/b/g II
Modem/Bluetooth
Fingerprint Reader

BTW, to find the listing of all the available notebook go look at the tabook PDF. You can find it on IBMs website by going to Products-->Notebooks-->Literature and scrolling down to it.

Hey, that's cool. I have considered living in Japan for a long time. I really enjoy the Japanese langauge and people. I lived there for a little over a month in Kurashiki a few years back and had a really nice time with my host families. Only time will tell what I do after I finish up my masters/PhD

getting there, little by little or as they say "choto zutsu" :)

Now to see if that IBM model is cheaper down here in Akihabara!! :D

in 2 weeks, i'll be receiving T42, model 2373K5H from IBM-Hong Kong.

Pentium M 735 (1.7 MHz),
ATI Mobility Radeon 9600 with 64MB
14.1" 1400x1050 SXGA+
512MB RAM
Centrino G/B 802.11
40 GB 5400RPM (this is the only part i did not like).
Biometric Fingerprint Scanner (i actually bought this model only to guarantee i will get SP2 pre-installed)

BUT, with the money saved, i had more than enough money leftover to order additional:
additional 512 MB RAM
Port Replicator II
additional Power AC Adapter
7K60 HDD (will be doing this shortly, separate from IBM offer)

since i'm not doing doing any PhotoShop, no program compiling, no AutoCad, a 1.7 MHz with 1GB RAM and 7K60 should be good enough for me...

OK, will want to experiment with HalfLife2 when it comes out...
