Some questions about the T41 i have got.. - newbie here!

#1 Post by bunder » Fri May 28, 2004 11:05 am

Hi Folks

I am in the UK and got myself a T41 via ebay.

For £1000, I have a 2373 4PG - TC14PUK

how much does it normally go for in the UK and also US? Did i get a good deal?

Its got 768megs of ram, centrino 1.6, 40 gig hard drive etc.

Now some questions..

How do i find out what type of screen is it eg: is it XGA or SXGA?
Is there some control that tells me?

My other question...

If I want to make it 54g wireless friendly, can I upgrade the wireless device it comes with. Any idea of cost for upgrading. I have attached my belkin 54g card to the machine and it works fine, but would be nice if there was an internal device to use instead.

How much in the UK or US should i expect to pay if I want to get a DVD writer for the machine? Is there much of a trade in value for the existing combi CD/DVD.

Also, like others, I have the "noise" going on in the top left hand corner, but it's not a major issue and if you have other sounds in the room, you really don't notice it.

thanks

Leslie

Can't tell you if you got a good deal. The 23734PG is your model number (actually model is 2373, type is 4PG in IBM-speak)

XGA is 1024x768
SXGA+ is 1400x1050
You should be able to tell by Display Properties max resolution. (BTW, I looked your model number up and you have a XGA screen)

You can upgrade internal wireless cards. The g version of the IBM costs ~US$100. I don't know the UK pricing (go to IBM UK's website and look at accessories for a miniPCI wireless card with b/g or a/b/g support) You currently have the Intel b wireless; I've found the IBM wireless cards to be better all around so if you upgrade, go with the a/b/g or b/g IBM wireless cards based on the Atheros chipsets.

In the US, the DVD writer is US$399. There is no "trade-in value" for the CD-RW/DVD drive. You'll have to see what you can get by selling it.

edited to remove my own idiocy

Congratulations on your new purchase.

Specs for your model are here:

http://www-306.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... ry=23734PG

It's XGA. It has the Intel PRO/Wireless 2100 802.11b adapter. You can upgrade it yourself to the new Intel PRO/Wireless 2200BG 802.11b/g adapter for about $60 US (http://www-132.ibm.com/webapp/wcs/store ... logId=-840). It's fairly easy to do. Just download the Hardware Maintenance Manual (http://www-306.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-46464) and follow the instructions for replacing the mini PCI wireless adapter. You also need to download the new 2200BG drivers from the T40 driver page (http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-46258).

That aint the serial number - it is the commercial marketing reference number - used for ordering.

Ahh.. I was trying to figure it out and it matched the format of my serial number, so I only assumed (and that goes back to the old saying about assumptions  )

Thats not bad going for the UK. I recently purchased a T40 myself from ebay.com - namely because I am travelling to the US this summer and can collect it then. If I imported it, it would be just over £1000 with VAT and import duty, as it happens, I got this for £850 inc. shipping.

I got:

- T40 (main difference being 266MHz bus on the T40 and 333MHz on T41)
- 40gb 5400rpm disk
- 512MB memory
- Pentium-M 1.5GHz
- SXGA 1400x1050 display
- 32MB ATI Radeon 9000
- CDRW/DVD Combo
- 1GB Ethernet
- Usual T40 stuff

And it was brand new, unopened sealed in original IBM box.

So I think you got a fair enough deal there, well done! Was that on eBay.co.uk or an import as well, was the £1k after import duty and VAT if it was an import?

the price of £1000 was from ebay in the UK.

I'm very happy with the deal as it was brand new and is a great piece of kit.

Hi folks,
I've recently bought a T41 (2373-4pg) and I'd like to upgrade it to Wireless g. Reading the IBM site it states that this is not a customer replaceable part and that there will be several torx security screws to prevent this. Is this a problem or will the mini pci card work anyway?
Also, how far can I go without voiding my warranty which I obviously don;'t want to do seeing as I have 2 years 11 months to go :)

Cheers

Dave
