T42 - Optical Drive not reading CDs

#1 Post by acd » Sun Dec 02, 2007 8:18 am

What to do? I am trying to install a wireless router and I need to use the install CD. But, after I put the CD in - a buzzing sound comes on for sometimes and then ... nothing... it doesn't read it!!!

Friends... can you please please help me! Thanks!

Run Pc-Doctor and test the drive.

You don't need to install anything when setting up a router. No drivers are needed for routers. The only thing that would require drivers is a new wireless card.

EDIT: I think the drive is probably toast. Is there a way you can borrow a different drive from a friend? If the CD works in one you borrow, then the drive is broken.

Have you tried other CD's / DVD's ?
Have you tried removing the CD-Drive, and re-inserting it again?

Have you tried cleaning the optical drive lens using a qtip with isopropyl alcohol?

Open up Pc-Doctor, go to 'system and device tests', click on 'storage', under the CDRW drive click on 'run test'. (or click on the CDRW icon itself). Follow the prompts. You will most likely be prompted to insert a disc with data on it to test with.
