Just ordered FVU but wondering if the SXGA screen is worth i
Even though my employer provides me with a laptop, I decided to buy my own T42. Once you're use to Thinkpad quality it's hard to go elsewhere. I am able to buy through the IBM Employee Discount(no I'm not an IBM employee) so it's a good deal.
I got the FVU which has the 1.7M, 14.1 SXGA with the 9600 Radeon for $1529. I can get a 5TU which is a 1.6M, Std 14.1, 512MB, Radeon 9000 for $1399.
I have not seen the SXGA screen but since I do like to watch movies on long flights and I like to have a bit more real estate so I figured that was a better bet. I have already ordered an additional 512MB of memory from Crucial.
So the difference once you add in the extra $115 for the memory is $238. I know not much of a difference, but that could go to purchasing the 9 cell battery I want to get too. Please let me know your thoughts/experiences on this. Thanks for your help!

I have the FVU and I love it. A number of my classmates have the 14.1 XGA screen, and I have to tell you the SXGA (IMHO) is definitely worth the extra money.
I have a 9 cell too (in addition to my 6 cell)

What about the viewing angle and the overall quality of the 14.1 SXGA+? I saw two different 14.1 SXGA+ yesterday (Dell 600m and Toshiba ?? model) and the lcd on the toshiba was bright and clear but the dell lcd was really ugly. That's my only concern before I buy a 2378-FVU.
FVU owners, what's your feedback on the SXGA quality, cripsness and viewing angle??
Thanks!!

I received my FVU yesterday and overall I'm very pleased. While the font is smaller I think the extra real estate is worth it. I had been using a Toshiba A75 desktop replacement with a 15.4 inch widescreen. I have to say that screen looks a lot better than the Thinkpad. VERY bright and crisp. But weighing in at over 9 lbs(with the power brick) given as much as I travel it's not worth it.
Any of you who have the 15" flexview think that the screen is brighter than the 14" SXGA T42? I might consider it if there is enough of a difference.

My friend has a Dell D600 with te SVGA+ screen and he complains all day about the viewing angle. The viewing angle on the T40's is a lot better.IR0NMAN wrote:What about the viewing angle and the overall quality of the 14.1 SXGA+? My 2cents as a 2378fvu owner -- as ashok said, the real estate is very nice, but it took me a while to adjust to the small type and lower brightness as compared to the XGA in my last T41. The XGA requires no effort to see where the SXGA+ does (for me).
Also, when you run games at 1024x768 on the XGA screen, you're running at native resolution. It's hard to run new games at 1400x1050 without compromising other image settings. Of course, I don't think you can get the Radeon 9600/64M with a XGA screen in a ThinkPad, so the 2378fvu would be a better choice for gaming, IMHO.

btw, get the FVU... it kicks [censored]
Get the FVU. I love the SXGA+ screen. It makes both work and play so much more enjoyable. I cannot stand working on a XGA anymore. Anything under 1280*960 is unbearable. Guess I am spoilt by the screen. Don't worry about brightness because I am actually using one step lower than the brightest setting for plugged-in work.

My 2378 FVU is worth the investment
I love my T42 very much. I've used it for 3 days. The screen is terrific and I set the extra large fonts for icons. Playing my Need For Speed and Tiger Woods Golf 2004 on it and I feel good about its overall performance.
By the way, I don't like those LCDs with coating protection because such screen reflect my own image like a mirror.
