generic battery replacement

#1 Post by frdchang » Wed Dec 05, 2007 4:09 pm

are the generic battery replacement's seen on ebay ok to use?

no one seems to be complaining on this board, so my guess is that it is ok.

thanks,

It's hit and miss, really, in my limited experience.

I've bought one for X24 that was hot and held horrible charge.

One for A3x series that worked fine for a couple of months then dropped dead out of the blue.

One 9-cell for T4x/R5x that is now several months old and still works well.

Personally, next time around I'm buying a used one here on forum, but to each his own.

I bought a generic 9 cell for my T43 almost 3 years ago. I've been using it in conjunction with the 6 cell that came with the laptop and now, the 9 cell I bought on ebay can still hold about 3 hours under normal conditions (MS word, firefox, listening to music).

I have to say that for the money I spent (around $70 shipped), I got a pretty good deal.

Its been miss and miss for me. I had a T2X battery which worked great, but one day the plastic halves just fell apart. I got a chance to look at the internals up close and the soldering was not great. Superglued the plastics back together and it still works.

Also had a T4X extended battery from BTI-- worked great till one day the battery gauge sensor in it died so now I can't tell how much power is left. Not very useful anymore.

The T2X battery was a couple years old. The BTI battery was purchased used.

Why? If you look carefully you can occasionally find new or close to new 6-cells for $20-$25 delivered, which I have done recently.

I ran down two generic battery packs on my old A30p. Both worked fine and even held (slightly) more power than the original pack.

I agree, generic batteries are a bit hit and miss. The big concern appears to be the electronics (in the battery) used to control the charging. Having said that, I think many (most?), genuine IBM thinkpad batteries may be "NOS" - and may have lost much of their usable life by just sitting on the shelf.

My preferred solution is to re-cell the battery with fresh, new cells. I use batteryrefill.com - they are a bit slow but their batteries come back with full charge capacity and seem to work well.

I bought a couple of UltraBay Slim LiPoly batteries from an eBay vendor last year, they were NOS with a manufacture date more than a year in the past, and they both worked great. YMMV.
