T42 fan error and questions

#1 Post by xAce84x » Thu Dec 06, 2007 1:20 am

Hello guys, I have a problem with my T42. This all started 5 days ago, I turned it on, and then got a fan error, and the comp just shuts off itself. I tried to turn it on again, and it shut down again. And before this problem around 2 months ago, when I would be downloading files overnight, I would close the lid, when I open the lid the next day, the screen would be a little redish before it goes back to being bright and normal again. At first I though it's nothing since I had this laptop for over 2 years. I guess the screen was redish because of the heat which I didn't know at first. So anyway, I went to ebay and bought a fan, installed it today, and the fan still wouldnt run properly. The fan wouldn't spin or anything, I tried to spin it manually to see if the laptop would bypass the fan error message, but it wouldn't. And I was reading this post about this guy who used battery to determine if the fan can spin. I want to know if anyone can tell me how to do that and also do you have any suggestions as to what I can do? And also, how can I be able to access my laptop's hard drive through my desktop? I don't think I want to invest 150 bucks on this laptop since it's pretty old already.

Dismantle your keyboard and clear the fan, re-install it and observe whether or not the "Fan error" still coming out?

If you continue to receive fan errors with a known working fan then the problem, unfortunately, is your motherboard.

The reddish tint is a sure sign of a failing LCD backlight. Your LCD could work forever this way or most likely will fail in the not to distant future I am sorry to say.

To use your hard disk in another computer there are several options. Get a external hard drive enclosure or there are several cables that will allow connection from your hard drive to the usb port in any computer.

What size is your LCD?

You can still boot up normally with a dead fan by pressing Esc right after the "Fan Error" message shows up; however, you need to be wary of your CPU temperature - since you're relying on passive cooling only, don't let it get too high.

Wrote this on my now super-silent T42 (really need to guess why? )

Awaiting my new fan, hopefully it will work...

FYI, T43 cannot boot up with "Fan Error" message pop in the BIOS, it will reboot automatically over and over...

Ya, I can't bypass the Fan error screen even when I pressed ESC, it will just shut down itself. My screen size is 14 btw. So after trying to fix my laptop for the past week with the new fan (which didn't work.) I just decided to call IBM to extend my warranty for an additional year for $149. I mean I figure that since most likely this is my motherboard's problem. So if I were to get it alone, it would cost me at least 100 something, so why not just get a warranty instead, u know. And I'm also gonna ask them to replace my LCD screen as well since I got a feeling it will give up on me pretty soon. So thanks guys for all your help, I will just send in my laptop next week, and get it back in a few days.

T43 cannot boot up with "Fan Error" message
I didn't know that; is that considered a "fix" on T43s but a "bug" on T42s?

Although xAce84x says he can't boot even with a T42.

Can someone explain to me why some can and others can't bypass the fan error message?

Well to answer your question, I think it's because some people have only the fan problem, which enable them to bypass the "fan error" screen. But in my case, I think I fried up my motherboard, which wouldn't let me go beyond the error message screen. That's just my 2 cents...
