Will a 90w adapter charge my battery faster?

#1 Post by macadamiaman » Fri Dec 07, 2007 4:40 pm

The battery never charges all that fast - especially toward 80-90%+ capacity. I'm thinking this is a product of my ~65w adapter being maxed out (between providing power to PC + charging battery @ 20-30w).

So, will a 90w adapter charge my battery any faster? (T43p w/ 9-cell + ultrabay batteries)

Thanks!

I'm confused. All my T4x machines came with 72W adapters.

Most 90W adapters are 20V for T6x or X6x. Do you have a 90W 16V adapter?

The 90w adapter is for the X6x, T6x, R6x and maybe other series ThinkPads.

Those machines use 20 volt chargers, instead of 16 volts. Also, the plug is a different size, so the answer is no.

On top of what richk said (bang on, richk), you *cannot* push power, only pull it. So even at the same voltage (if one existed), it would not charge faster. ... JDH

Sort of - I'm pretty sure that there are some machines - maybe even the newer thinkpads - that charge faster with a "non-compact" charger. They sense a slight voltage drop in the incoming voltage to determine when the power supply is starting to get near its current limit. They then throttle back the charge rate to match. These are not simple linear circuits, they use really advanced current sources to charge the lithium batteries at an optimal rate based on available power, longevity profiles, and temperature.
