T41 CDRW/DVD problem: the tray doesn't stay in when pushed

#1 Post by kosse » Sun Dec 09, 2007 2:32 am

Dear forum members,

The topic pretty much says it all. I have to push the tray several times for it to stay in normally. What kind of mechanism holds the tray in place and is there a way of fixing it or do I need a new drive? My CDRW/DVD P/N is 92P5993.

Thanking

I looked closer and I think I now know what the problem is. In the right side of the tray there is a small spring that operates the plastic button that keeps the tray inside the drive. It seems like the spring has gotten too "tired" to do it's work any more. Does anyone know where I might find a similar spring to replace the one I have? It would be rather stupid to replace the whole drive because of that :?

It's not part of the drive, but rather part of the Ultrabay guide rail assembly. Look for an entire assembly.

Thank you for your input but I don't believe it's the ultrabay assembly itself. I think my previous explanation might have been hindered by a language barrier.

I'll try to rephrase the problem:

The CD-ROM drive goes to the ultrabay slot normally and ejects from it normally. So there's nothing wrong here. The tray of the CD-ROM drive itself (by tray I mean the thing where you put CDs in), however, has problems staying in when I put a CD in on it and push it back in. It jumps out really easily and that's why I suspected the spring that seems that it is the only thing holding it inside.

I don't see how Ultrabay rail assembly affects this, or does it? If it does then I stand corrected

I see. You could ask on the Marketplace forum for a bad drive with a working tray at a low price ... or just replace the drive.

Thanks. I'll need to think about it. I will ask IBM for sure for extra spring since I had in mind to contact them anyway for FIN keyboard.
