It depends on how much warranty is included. Does buy.com say anything about that?
If it doesn't have any warranty, I would rather get one on eBay for <$300.

I picked up a couple of 75U's there earlier this year for $499. So far both users seem very happy.
From all the paperwork that came with it (1 page from IBM Global Financial services) I couldn't tell if there was warranty or not.
They were not 10/10 but maybe 9.5/10 as far as condition goes. I saw the email too and was tempted. The will sell quickly so if there is even a thought to buy one don't hesitate.

Several coupons are available for Buy.com. See if you can use any of them. Alternatively, if you're a member of Mypoints.com, you can get 2 points per dollar spent.

Re: Is this a Good Price
In my opinion, $400 for a refurbished T40 is very (very!) expensive. Personally, I would stay away from this "offer".jrv331 wrote:I got an email from buy.com for the following, its 399.99 with free shipping. Is this a good deal? Its reconditioned.

If you have a look in the thead Certified Used T42p - Very disappointed (see the post of Wed Dec 12, 2007 8:00 pm, and follow the links pointed to there), you will learn that the warranty on refurb. T40 will expire with the 3 months offered by IBM, and that the warranty after that cannot be extended. Moreover, T40's are well known to suffer from the "loose GPU chip" problem, as discussed in the thead t42 shuts down when i move it, so you should certainly think twice before buying a T40. Kindly understand that I am not saying that you should not buy a refurb. T40, but that I suggest you consider the above.
If I were to get a T4x ThinkPad, around the $400 pricetag, I would absolutely watch out for a 15" SXGA+ FlexView/IPS T42 at eBay and/or in the Marketplace in this forum (cheapest on eBay, but you don't always know what you get... much better, and "safer" communication/feeling if dealing via the Marketplace here).
I have been lurking for 15" SXGA+ FlexView/IPS T42's at eBay for quite a while, and these days they go for around $350-$450 depending on configuration and bidders. So, if you consider T42's, I highly recommend getting one with some remaining amount of intitial, three-year base warranty - this warranty can be extended for two more years for around $150 as discussed in the thread FS Flexview heaven T60P and T42P's (see the post of Sun Nov 25, 2007 1:41 pm).
If you want to study recent, completed eBay-auctions on 15" SXGA+ FlexView/IPS T42's, have a look at these items: 120189212013 ($429), 330193262615 ($350), 270189321646 ($331), 270187598038 ($355), 130174285512 ($410), 190172301887 ($339), 170166623194 ($457), 300171445183 ($455), 200171492347 ($380), 130170088801 ($491) and 200168181988 ($401)... just to mention a few!
Good luck with your new ThinkPad!
Best regards,
Johan

Agreed. I just got my T40 on ebay for $290 shipped. Some people want a machine with a warranty, which is totally understandable. I'm a hands-on person, so saving money is worth it if I have to do some work on it to get it to my standards.pianowizard wrote:It depends on how much warranty is included. Some T40s are still under IBM's 3 year warranty, which might have more left than the 6 months you might get on the website. Some people have pointed that out as well.
What's important to you? Warranty? Or price? It's not that simple, ultimately, but those are big points to consider.
Cell phones are my specialty. Got questions? Ask away.
