Can't Make a Working Clone on my T42 With Norton Ghost

#1 Post by bapatterson » Wed Nov 17, 2004 2:00 pm

I used Norton Ghost 2003 on my previous T40 without problem to make clones of the hard drive for back-up purposes.

I just received a new T42 with the 40GB 7,200 rpm drive and have tried Norton Ghost versions 2003, 2004, and version 9 (the latest release) to make a clone drive.

I tried a smaller 20GB drive (the content of my new drive is only about 15GB), a 30GB drive, and a duplicate sized 40GB drive.

Ghost seemed to work fine on all three drives, but when I swap them, I get the blue screen of death or the Windows boot screen (the light blue one after the BIOS load) and it never finishes booting.

I am doing everything the same as I did with my old T40, but I cannot get a working clone with my T42.

Help! (and thanks!)

theres something installed on your T40 that your T42 doesnt like.

ive ghosted countless T42's at work and not come across any blue screens, although i use T42 images on T42..

Ghost Parameters

#3 Post by BobsThinkPad » Wed Nov 17, 2004 8:27 pm

I read an article/post recently (can't remember where) that indicated you need to use the -IB parameter when you Ghost a T42 drive. It described the same problem you are having. What they said was the the T42 uses multiple boot sectors and this parameter lets Ghost transfer those sectors to the new drive.

Another post indicated that the -ID switch should also be used to copy multiple partitions. This was on a T41.

Since I don't have Ghost I don't know if either of these are correct or if they will work but it might be worth a try. Good luck...Bob

I was trying to make a T42 to T42 clone.

My reference to the T40 is that I know how to use Ghost as I have used it many times on my previous T40.

What's the error message on that blue screen?

Try following the instructions here http://episteme.arstechnica.com/eve/ubb ... 1400925745 . That article is for replacing the mobo. So do what it says, and when it says now it's ok to switch the mobo, instead make a backup of the drive and try booting from that backup.

I too can not get Ghost to work. I'm using the -IB parameter.

FYI: I found the IBM note that says to use the -IB paramter:

Thanks for posting this, sorry to hear you're having trouble. It's really concerning. I have a T42p and several Ghost backups. If I understand correctly, these backups are useless, since they were made without me using the -IB command line switch. So I guess they're trash. :(

I feel like ghosting a new drive just to be sure it will work ... has ANYONE gotten Ghost to work with their T42?

new HD?

#8 Post by oraclejock » Thu Dec 16, 2004 5:58 pm

I have a 2378FVU. I swapped the 40G hd with a 80G, installed OS/apps, and used Ghost 9 to backup the HD. Will I be able to restore using that image?

I have about 10 T42 (2378FVU) with Windows 2000 and used Ghost 7.5 to roll out without using the key recommended by IBM. I haven't had problem with using ghost 7.5 with T42/Windows 2000. Wonder what's going on?

Well I just checked my Ghost config file and I have been using the -IB parameter from the beginning. This makes me wonder, am I ok? Or not? There's only one way to find out ... and I'm not sure I want to test it.

I do have a RR&R backup on CD made recently. Does that backup image the drive as I have it configured, or, does it just make "generic" restore CDs that make the system look the way it did from the factory? (I am pretty sure it's the former, just want to be sure).

TIA,

read some posting in this forum last month that Norton Ghost v9.0 is quite good, able to make a hard drive image even with Windows running (ie: they've almost caught up with a competitor product that starts with a letter "A").

have not tried this out myself, however.

hope this helps point you in the right direction...

(i tried using Norton Ghost in Norton Systemworks Professional 2002 version and gave up on it--too complicated and not user friendly.)

I would say it might because of the Active HDD protection software (or device). As I know, this software only protect the HDD attached to IDE 0. It didn't protect the HDD in the ultrabay slim. Once you wanna boot from ultrabay slim HDD, you will get blue screen for sure. You have to remove the software first in order to boot successfully.

T40 didn't come with this feature, so there is no problem at all.

Anyone made progress on this?

So we are clear, with Systemworks 2003 Ghost (whatever version that is)... I am unable to boot a restore made with -IB parameter.

Had that proublem, had to use gdisk 1: /mbr to fix master boot sector. Seams that it corupts it and this fixes it.

I have not tried Ghost on my notebook yet, but I have on my desktop. I found that with widxp pro SP1 and earlier everything works ok, but with SP2 some weird stuff is happening. I can take images and restore them but they will not work correctly,...

Just my two cents.

Has anyone tried taking the HD's out of the latop and performing the cloning via a desktop or another laptop? I usualy do advanced HD diagnostics, foresnics and cloning of disks when they are not actualy in a machine being used, if at all possible, makes things a lot easier. A cheap standard IDE to laptop IDE converter is easy to get, and a cheap USB/IDE converter is also useful.

I will try this when I get my T42, as I plan on getting my base multiboot OS install configured to my essential needs and then making the clone image to a desktop drive so that I can do a quick recovery if I have data corruption or major HD problems when i'm in the field.
