Would like to assign the T41 COM port to COM2. Its default is COM1 (3f8,irq 4). Went into BIOS and set address to 2f8, irq 3 (typical COM2). Booted into W2k and the device manager still shows COM1, albeit with the new address/irq information).
Does anyone know how to make the Thinkpads built-in serial port to show as COM2?
Lastly, is the built-in serial port a real serial port? Been having trouble finding a USB-serial doggle which works with some APRS software so I NEED the built-in port and perfer it as COM2.
Thanks

I tried that in XP and W2k. They both allow the COM port number to be changed. There is a glitch however, which only happens in W2K BTW; but first a little more background.Msmax wrote:Did you tried in "Device Manager -> advanced" to set the port to COM2?
it is possible with XP.
I have a USB to serial adapter. Would like the adapter to be COM1, TP's port to be COM2. All of this is to accomodate numerous old software packages used here across multiple PC's and OS's. Some software accepts the adapter but most software looks for a real serial port. The software is setup for COM2! Thus my need to have TP's serial port recognised as COM2 (it's a real RS-232).
Incredibly, XP allows me to change ports as needed and shows no errors. The adapter accepts this and can be installed as COM1. W2k SP4 however, allows the change but the adapter software still shows the TP port as COM1 and active, and REFUSES to set itself as COM1. That's the glitch!
Wish I could find a USB to serial adapter which REALLY looks and functions like the real RS232's!
