Constant fragmented files when defragging...

#1 Post by SimonCC » Thu Nov 18, 2004 12:45 pm

When i perform defragmentation, at the end there is still a red line of fragmented files, excuse my ignorance here but is this normal??

Which defragmenting tool are you using?
And what files are fragmented?

You need a tool that defragments the Paging File as well (That's the rest that doesn't get defragmented), but as discussed before, this probably doesn't matter too much.

There are better defragmenter tools around than the built-in, if you prefer to lay down a few bucks. They are able to defragment the page file at the next reboot.

i use Sysinternals page file defragmentor, but this does not stop the red line from appearing in windows defrag. Is it actually possible to totally defrag then? Shoulf i end up with no fragmented files??? As for getting a defrag utility, i dont know which one to trust as there are so many!

If you have more than one account, AND have selected to "Make my files private" in one or more of those accounts, then any files in the My Documents folder (for the accounts with private files) can only be defragged when you are logged in as that user.

So you might need to login to each account and defrag.

...rather than rely on the defrag graphical results, click on the View Report button. The report will list the files which remain fragmented, listing how many fragments comprise each file. Try running the defrag tool a few times, checking the defrag report each time. You should see improved results each time. You did not specify how long it's been since you last defragged your hard drive. It may take a few iterations to fully defrag your hard drive.

Lastly, the Windows defrag utility is quite good - basically, a manual version of Executive's commercial defragment utility, Diskeeper.

ok, so my master file table appears to be fragmented into 3 files when it should be 2. I have read on the microsoft website that it can only be defragmented if there is enough storage to relocate the file on the hd, as the file is only 60mb (and i have 79% of my hd left over) why is it not being defragmented??? help!

You'll need a better defragmenter than the one that is integrated in XP to do that. They are capable of defragmenting large parts of the MFT on-line, the rest is done during boot-up if you choose so. But according to the report you posted, you've already got an almost perfectly defragmented drive. That the MFT is split into three instead of two fragments is absolutely nothing to bother about, you shouldn't be so much concerned about that. Even Executive Software, the maker of Diskeeper (and the defragmenter that comes with Windows 2000 and XP) states that the goal of defragmenting is not to make a disk look "pretty" (which is absolutely correct):

I use Raxco PerfectDisk V6 and it works exceedingly well for the money (small). It is more effective than the Windows product (works, and free), it can be easily automated, it's fast, and it uses no significant resources. You can keep right on working while PD is defragging. Worth the money. And vastly, vastly, more productive and cheaper that formatting just to defrag.

Use Diskeeper. I wouldn't use anything else.

Also if you have the Rescue and recovery installed, those files can not be opened or defraged and they appear as fragmented files.

When you do it in safe mode do you still loose your restore points?

Obviously it turns off system restore during installation, as files are written to protected folders (the minint-system, for instance). These folders are so well protected that even system restore isn't able to access their contents, thus reverting to a system restore point that was set before the installation of R&R would run the high risk of screwing up the whole system. In other words: system restore cannot remove R&R and in trying so, it would probably destroy your complete Windows installation. So it's a preventive measure.
