Students/Edu Store Purchasers

#1 Post by He-Man » Thu Nov 18, 2004 1:15 pm

Did anyone here buy their tpad through IBM's edu pricing program (through IBM a a student/educator, not through a school store)?

Please PM me if so.

Thanks.

I have only heard about the purchase programs through college/university buying programs for students or full-time staff -- but I will be teaching in Boston this winter as an adjunct. Could this be my route to a new T-pad?

yeah.. it might be :D i went through this site:

http://www.ibm.com/education/us/

since i'm a student, i went through the "student pc purchase" link on the bottom right, however in your case u might want to try the faculty and staff page....

if the model you want isnt giving you free shipping (mine was showing up as the standard $35), then just call ibm and ask them about it, and you can place your order over the phone at the online quoted price with free shipping

for those who purchased through IBM's edu price program (phone or online), what type of warranty was standard?

There is no "standard". It depends on which model Thinkpad you purchase and what, if any, warranty upgrade you might purchase at the same time.

this has been discussed before.... IBM does regular audits of such purchases.... those doing things this way run the risk of automatic future charge-backs to their CC of the discount taken, cancellation of their warranty, and possible fraud action... no one employs more attorneys than IBM... you need to ask yourself if this is worth it.... in addition, those who choose to take these chances are asked NOT to discuss it on this board, or the potential liability will spread here too......

I agree with lfeagan. This behavior of pretending to be an academic/student is just plain UNETHICAL and STUPID and should not be condoned. In the legal world there is a word for such behavior: FRAUD.

Mr. Eagan,

Bad as this thread may become, it's useful to show that there ARE ramifications should one attempt to defraud IBM.

Besides, the OP is apparently attempting to find ammo for his argument with IBM that his model 2378 education Thinkpad should have a 3 year warranty, not the 1 year it came with.

I noticed at the Educational page, it says Students/Alumni. So this may apply to current students and recent graduates. It does not specify the number of years since graduation that one can still apply the discount. Those who are interested in the alumni discount may want to contact IBM to see the necessary qualifications.

Hope this helps someone.

I have to disagree with some of the "ethical" points of view on this thread. I resent subsidizing half (or more) of the thinkpad purchasing population (IBM employees, college students/alumni, businesses, miscellaneous and sundry credit card holders, etc - who do you think makes up the difference???). If everyone on this board would buy their thinkpads from Bill, he could negotiate a much more favorable discount and we wouldn't have to engage in those supposed "unethical" practices.

my earlier post, probably the strongest in this thread, had nothing to do with ethics, but warned of consequences that I have personal knowledge about....I was only trying to warn people of specific consequences so they could make an informed decision... as far as the "subsidizing" argument, IBM (or anyone) has the right to sell or not to sell to anyone at any price.... you have the right to buy or not..... legitimate student discounts are common with all large vendors.... as far as the comment regarding purchasing from Bill, I agree completely.....

How does the student discount compare to the shareholder's discount?

My student discount was 20%. I think that is pretty standard fare. I can't imagine the discount for anyone being more than 30-35%. Well...other than the obvious people, Sam P gets his for free...etc etc...

Coincidentally, my price is almost exactly equal to my model number, I paid $2367.20 I bought the extra 512MB I have from Newegg.
