Can I transplant R50p into t42 Plastics

#1 Post by xyz » Sat Dec 22, 2007 4:50 pm

Just picked up a banged up r50p was advertised as a faulty backlight, but lucky for me it was just the mechanical standby switch that was faulty.. hehe.

I was wondering as the plastics are in a bad shape can i transplant this into a t42 shell, ie base and plastics ... i know the Lcd will be fine and the planars were more or less the same so should just need the plastics yes ?

There are problems. I don't have an R50 board around to check all the holes, but here is what I can tell you off the top of my head. First, the R50e has no dock connector, so there will be a big unused hole, but that can be covered by duct tape. The fans are different, but you might get away with a T40 fan. The LCD won't fit right and I don't think you can fix that. The cables are different to make up for the R series thicker profile, and the connector on the back of the pannel has a different pin arrangement, so you need a T series cabel with a T series panel, etc. and yoyr R50e assembly won't fit right in a "T" case.

It doesn't matter. The "R" cable doesn't fit right in the "T" lid and you need to use an "R" panel with the "R" cable. It doesn't fit and may damage the morherboard. All the connectors are the same, but the cable and panel arrange the connectors differently.

That will NOT fly.

The difference in lids' sizes was the exact reason why T42p has never been offered with a QXGA screen as an upgrade, while R50p has.

You can try to force it in, but proceed at your own expense.

How bad can the original plastics be? Has someone gone after it with a chainsaw? Maybe you should just collect a few bits and pieces and get it going...

Just checked the part numbers the Lcd part number for the 15" uxga panel (id tech) are the same for both the t4x and the r50p.

Also the r50p I have does have a dock connector as well ...

I was not talking about the LCDs, which are basically the same.

Lid sizes are different to accommodate for different cabling/connecting.

I happen to be in possession of both R50p and T42p and have owned a variety of FlexView machines within this palette and guarantee you that there will be issues with this transplant.

As I've stated before-your money, your ThinkPads. But you have been forewarned.

Good luck.
