Is it me or does IBM offset the HD on OS installs?
Is it me or does IBM offset the HD on OS installs?
I dont know, yet, if they offset the clusters, sectors FAT table or what, but, I had a T41 that I backed up with ghost. When I go to restore, my drives info comes up undetectable. I have tried more than one drive to no avail. I have to do a recover install to get back up and running???? SOmething, somewhere is off set or something. I just have not found out what it is... Also, if I have a functional drive, take it out, stick it in my other computer as a secondary, Powerquest throws an error trying to read it. Trust me, its not a damaged drive, this has been going on with at least 3 different drives. Anyways, anyone run into this?

Re: Is it me or does IBM offset the HD on OS installs?
There are some well known issues with some versions of Ghost (and not just applicable to ThinkPads). I stopped using Ghost a long time ago so can't assist you with Ghost problems.sikpupy wrote:Anyways, anyone run into this?
Acronis True Image does work fine with ThinkPads, and requires nothing special to be done compared to any other type of system (I have been using it since Version 7 and its now at version 11).
Cheers,

Hmm, does Acronis have a little boot file/program like Ghost? I will have to check that out and maybe convert everything, lol. I actually have a old old version of Acronis 6.0 I bought from them off the web. Now, I am using ghost 2003 and I honestly cant remember if it is a hacked version or I legitamitly got it somewhere. I was in a hack and crack stage a looooong time ago, but, I useually dont try to get something hacked when it involves important stuff, and, when I did get hacked stuff, it was useually just to try it before I bought it. Heck, I am always making donations to freebee sites for thier programs, but, anyways, I have been using disks made from the installed 03 version. Reinstalling back onto my desktop seems to work, but, throw the image onto my IBM and forget it. Thing is, I dont see how it can be the Ghost program. If I have XP running on the thinkpad and then take the drive out, to say copy stuff, my desktops Powerquest program has a coniption fit and says error, bad cluster 80 or something. I cant remember exactly what it is. I tried installing an OS on the drive from another computer and when I put the disk into the IBM machine, it says non boot/system disk. Its almost as if the thinkpad wants to start reading the drive at a different start position. BIOS security measure?

There's a link in the above document to a 30 day trial version of Acronis. Acronis has worked 98% of the time after many clones of many different TP's. The other 2% had to be redone but also came out fine after the second run.

Back to the original question, it is the master boot record that is different. Read this:
http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Rescue_and_Recovery
http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Rescue_and_Recovery
I read that over quickly and while I didnt catch anything that said "problems will occure if you dont use the recovery disks", but, maybe I need to reread it?
Also says "As they are ordinary partitions they are accessible by ordinary partitioning tools. They should be dealt with carefully. " but this is at the beginning of the description. So, does this mean only in an IBM laptop? This again leaves me to wonder what happens to the disk between it being in the laptop and then put on a desktop.
-->"The Master Boot Record (MBR) must be configured properly for the Rescue and Recovery application to function properly. When possible, the Rescue and Recovery application attempts to ensure the proper configuration of the MBR. This can only occur if the Rescue and Recovery application is installed after other applications that requires the MBR."
So, this means XP goes on first, which loads the OS in its normal spot, I assume. So, does Rescue and Recovery change something? I will say no, unless it is in the bios, because, I have no rescue recovery software loaded and have the issues.
I do not use that primarily and works fine when loaded on, but, of course, I dont have multipule computers with Linux so I cant check the file system to see if there is problems reading it, like windows. Then again, I do have enough HDs to try, even though I am wasting enough time with windows, lol.
"GRUB in a partition's boot sector
A way to have your Access IBM button still functional on bootup, is to create a separate /boot partition,"
Okay, thats fine, but, then, I should still be able to see the disk partitions in windows...maybe? Again, havnt played with a linux disk on windows.......yet.
The only thing I see is in the beginning where it says "changes the partition type of the Rescue and Recovery partiton to 0x0b, otherwise it changes it to 0x12 (to hide it from Windows) ". but still does not explaine....unless I am still missing something...
1) working image (made from backup DVD of store bought XP and then having to reinstall XP from XP only disk) on laptop ----> desktop computer as slave = corrupt disk reading
2) ghosted image from CD/DVD to hard drive in IBM laptop using IBM CD drive= operating system not found but fine as slave on desktop

Thinkpads read the hard disk geometry differently than a desktop does. You need to clone an image to a drive while it is in the Thinkpad. If you apply the image while connected to a desktop it will not work in a Thinkpad.

clone an image to or from? From would make sense (which is my last conclusion to this whole thing and sucks), as long as GHOST doesnt screw it up. Just so happens that all images are cloned from my desktop and stuffed onto my laptop because I keep changing programs, this and that....etc and I like to take my desktop with me.
If I clone from desktop to DVD, then, IBM laptop DVD player to IBM hard drive, no dice.

This is totally right. I use the ultrabay hard drive caddy with another hard drive in it to clone to using acronis. Works every time. Boots fine. On occasion with clones of clones some software works funny like office missing some things.carbon_unit wrote:Thinkpads read the hard disk geometry differently than a desktop does. Ghost never worked for me.

Well, since little Timmy is apparently watching and goodness forbid something naughty comes out, we will keep this a G rated site so no one falls off their morality wagon and has a coronary, or, god forbid aneurism (I wouldn’t want that to happen or be on my shoulders). And I also promise to be a good little boy, eat ALL my peas and carrots and say my bed time prayers. God bless you tiny Tim!

I use Ghost all the time to clone T4x series with no problems. You do need to set a few switches to get the boot record to copy properly. This is done from a DOS prompt. Here is the line to copy physical drive 2 to 3:
This copies the internal drive to the one in the HDD carrier in the ultrabay slim slot with a T43. Change the arguments for “src” (source drive) and “dst” (destination drive) as needed.
For convenience, I store these as batch commands on a Lenovo bootable USB flash drive, along with Ghost. If you change the boot order to move “-USB HDD” before the CD ROM or internal HDDs, just restart the PC with the USB flash drive installed and type the batch command.
Code: Select all
GHOST -clone,mode=copy,src=2,dst=3 -ib –fniFor convenience, I store these as batch commands on a Lenovo bootable USB flash drive, along with Ghost.
