t43 15" screen too much/big?

I wonder about the 15" screens. Since they are 1024x768, that extra inch, is it a blessing or a curse? I liked my T41 14" but not sure about going 15". Sounds good on paper. Does the extra inch give a bigger font print or just more space to use the good ol t41 type font? Also, side by side, is it much bigger? If it IS bigger, does that give it more room to put a bigger fan in for better cooling?

OK, a couple of issues here...

Not all 15" LCDs are XGA (1024x768), but those that are will have everything bigger when compared to 14" XGA, so, no, you won't get any LCD real estate by that switch. It may be easier on your eyes, though.

If you liked 14" XGA, chances are that you'd like 15" SXGA+ (1400x1050) even more, but you won't know that until you test it out yourself. And, on T42 and T43 as well as on T60/p, these are IPS FlexView LCDs which are a treat in their own right. And here you would get some noticeable extra space on the screen.

As for cooling, most of T4x machines with 15" LCD have come with stronger fans from the factory to begin with, although it's the CPU that dictates the fan type, and not the screen size.

Yes it does. Using the T41 as an example, Its screen font was a little too tiny for me. I was looking at all the XGA only screens, in the T's and R's 14/15 versions. I know there are Sxga and Uxga's out there. When I saw there is a XGA 15", I was thinking (as an example) would going from the 14" to the 15" be like going from 1024x768 to 800x600? Of course not that drastic, but, same principle.

Also, the laptop having a 15" screen, is it ........ hmmm, how should i say ....... cumbersome or a pain with all that LCD realeastate?

As for the cooling, everyone says, so I am reading so far, that the T43's run a little hotter than some others. I was wondering if the 15 inch size gave more room in the case, therefore allowing a bigger heatsink, which would theoretically = more cooling.

Well, I'm the wrong person to talk to about these issues, since I'm an UXGA/FlexView addict, and have been one for years...

If you found the fonts etc on a T41 with XGA tiny, you're a prime candidate for 15" XGA, and these can be found fairly cheap these days...and I doubt that you'll find them painful.

As for T43s being hot and noisy...noisy they are, but you get a nice kick in the performance with that noise. Hot...personally, I feel that once you've gone above 2.0 in the Pentium M world, everything gets hot...T43p with 2.13 processor is unbearably hot, but T42p with 2.1 isn't that far behind at all...laptops these babies are not, unless you are intent on retiring from certain earthly pleasures sometime soon...

Having owned T43s in almost any shape, size and form, my favourite processor is still 1.8...simply because it's fast enough and not too hot.

The other side of the coin is that T43s are far less prone to motherboard failures due to flexing, for whatever reason...and most of them will have some warranty left...

I think the flexing problem is simple, and, a simple solution. You just need to but some supporting rubber buttons under the middle of the laptop. Set your laptop on a table and press on the touch pad a little. You will see the flex if you look closely. Hard part would be finding a rubber foot/pad the right thickness. Of course if you have it on your lap, you might get some unwanted grinding (if your a man ) but, hey, whats it worth to saving your baby?

Are you familier with the R52's heat? I am sure it puts out the same per chip, but, having more encloser space may cool it down a bit more and keep it, at least, feeling cooler on the lap? Then whats up with all that speed step stuff? Hmm, I thought running at lower speeds would make it a cooler chip? Maybe it just has to do with voltage more than speed. Guesss I am going to have to go with the fastest I can find on ebay, be it a t43 or a r52, though, I like the sleeker looking t43. They can be had for $350, r52 more so than the t43, if you catch them at the right time, and, I have a little time .
