Questions on TP 'TYPE's'

#1 Post by sojourner » Fri Dec 28, 2007 9:19 am

I have two TP41's I'd like identified as the same TYPE. One is a 2373-298, other is 2373-7FU. I've changed so much (HDD, RAM, WIFI, CPU) I imagine the original TYPE has changed. So the questions are these:

1. DOES changing CPU, RAM, WIFI card, HDD change the TYPE?
2. Does XP (with IBM's software) look at this TYPE for any reason after the OS is installed (or at all)?
3. Can the TYPE designation be changed to ANY three digit designation (e.g. my initials: ABC, OR any number: 123)?

Lastly, will changing the lappie's TYPE have any adverse consequences anyone knows of?

Thanks

The type denotes the original configuration when it was manufactured. That is all, although is some machines (i.e. R52) the first 4 digits denote much more. In the case of R52, it denotes the graphics unit. (ATi vs. Intel)

There is no benefit whatsoever in altering the last 3 character identifier in the ThinkPad model number.
