CD/DVD RW does not work properly

#1 Post by Padhead » Sat Dec 29, 2007 5:29 pm

Hey Folks, anyone had this problem?

My CD/DVD RW doesn't recognize blank DVD's. It thinks that they are CD's. It reads and plays DVD movies, but if I try to format or burn a DVD it thinks it is a CD, and then formats the DVD disk as a CD.

I recently ( last night) had to rescue and restore this machine.

Any thoughts?

I would try another brand media.

If this doesn't solve the problem your DVD-RW has failed.

What is the FRU?

I would go to the IBM ThinkPad support page, for your model of ThinkPad and look for an firmware upgrade for the DVD/CD drive.

I upgraded the firmware of my GDR-8083N drive (FRU:08K9864) last summer, and suddenly i could read burnt DVD's (before the firmware upgrade i wasn't able to do that :D )

But caution is needed, because if you turn your ThinkPad off during the update process, your DVD/CD drive is screwed!

What are you using for DVD burning software? XP (and also vista) has no "drag-and-drop" support for DVD writing the same way it does for CDs. You need something like Nero.

At this point, I cant even format the DVD disk. But you got me thinking Maybe it is a software problem

Anyways, I just spent 15 minutes on the Lenovo site. Lots of information about the drive, but these idiots don't have the drivers for it! Rediculous!

Apparently it is a cd dvd rw drive from a t43. It was replaced on warranty by IBM My machine is a t41.

It worked before I restored yesterday. The rescue and restore probably put the old drivers or software on it.

I can not find the [censored] drivers on the Lenovo website. WTF!

Man I just want my new T60p flexview to arrive!

Does the system update software give the drivers for the model number of what's actually in the machine?

Because Lenovo doenst have this driver anywhere on its site. I just looked for over a half hour.

Frank,

Which DVD-R software are you using?

Usually the software you use would be able to write to your drive.

Can you read a commercially prepared DVD?

Frank,

If your ThankPad is under warranty I would call and explain the situation.
