ThinkVantage System Update gets confused on my T41p

#1 Post by S2kDriver » Mon Dec 31, 2007 5:13 pm

I have a T41p system and I had to do a complete recovery yesterday on my hard drive and afterwards, downloaded the ThinkVantage System Update 3.1 and installed it. Then, I went ahead and downloaded the updates (was around almost 400 MB worth of updates), after which the system told me I needed to reboot.

I did so, but after logging onto Windows, I noticed that the Access Connections wasn't under the ThinkVantage menu under Start, neither was the Access Connections icon in the lower right of the screen. I started up System Update again, clicked on "View Installation History", and the log claims it was installed. So, I search for updates again and Access Connections comes up on the list of things I can install. But wait, didn't the log tell me it was already there? What's going on?

I did the whole song and dance again, installed it, told me I needed to reboot and so I did once more. Log onto Windows and it's still not under the ThinkVantage menu again, still showing as installed under "View Installation History" and still comes up when I search for updates. Maybe it got half installed? I don't know what happened.

So, I went to IBM's website and manually installed Access Connections and now it's really installed. And when I do a search in System Update, it doesn't come up on the list anymore. So now, I've lost confidence in System Update telling me what's really installed or not installed on my system.

Anyone else have this issue? What's the resolution?

Thanks in advance.

I have completely removed the System Update software - I'm a bit old skool and prefer to manually check (usually every couple of weeks or so) & install software updates from Lenovo only if it's necessary or relevant as some software updates are just supporting new model types into the mix... etc. :)
