TV remote to control Thinkpad through infrared

Is that possible?

I tried Girder and IRAssistant without luck. I believe in order to get it to work the IR device in thinkpad must be assinged a COM port. It's not the case in XP as it's not using a generic IR device driver.

Any expert in this area?

While not really IR. The ATI remote has USB RF receiver that should work.
It really depend what program you want to remote control.
