The screen went mad!

Mmm...not sure if you guys get this, but sometimes when I plug the AC adapter to my T-40 the screen would go dark, very dark, and I am not able to make it brighter, I had to reboot the computer in order to have the brightness and color back. Do you know if tthis is a common problem in the thinkpad?
