I own a T42p 2373-GXG with Matshita CD-RW/DVD drive.
Does anybody know if it supports burning of 800 MB (90 min) CDs?
Some burners don't support it and I don't want to risk a CD.
If it does support it, how do I set it in Nero?
Thanks a lot you Thinkpad maniacs!

Um...it was my understanding that they will but it's mainly software controlled. perhaps a serach on google will yield a quicker solution and more to the correct answer.

That's the thing... I can't seem to find any info if the burner supports it or not on the net... Was hoping you might have some experience with this.
Nah, I'll try and burn it and we'll see.
Thanks anyway.

You have to set the nero program to overburn
and this can be done in the prefrences under expert features.

Bear in mind part of Nero's popularity is it's ability to detect cdr drive features like overburn. You may want to get the 6.3.x.x version if you don't have it, since the newest version 6.6.0.x called "reloaded" reportedly removes certain features that enthusiasts want ...
Here is at least one online drive database -- that I'm not sure if it's up to date and/or whether slimbay drives are included:

What certain features are these, if you know.
I have not been able to find any.

Some Known issues:
Many complain problems either burning with or especially with verifying burns with this version. Also conniptions with nve3 burning, with users having to create a disk image first, adds up to 20-40 minutes to burn workflow.
New compatibility issues that crop up with SP2 that did not exist with prior Nero versions -- big surprise.
With project compilated or image open for a writing and Burn button selected, Nero ejects the disk with message about "not enough space on disk" and waits for other media. Same projects, machines and media writes succesfully with prior versions.
If the recorder starts burning when you begin transcoding, you need to uncheck "Use Burn-at-once" under "Recording Settings" in the "Burn Options" window. For some inexplicable reason, that toggle is set by default in the new version.
Problems with licensing - cryptic message "DRM check. Insufficient burn licences for burning audio file" can appear even if burning rights are included in file.
Mpg files can apparently some sort of deadlock and mpg files that used to whiz past at disk copy speeds now now transcode slowly.
Some report that even the quality has decreased when a recode is done.
NVE 2 did all the authoring before touching the recorderbut NVE 3 now starts the recorder, resulting in a ruined disk if a problem arises in transcoding.

Hi!
I ordered a T42p UC2GXGE (so it should be VERY similar to yours) and should recieve it next week (at least I hope so...) I may test it for you. I have two 99min CDs lying around because my old writer can't handle them. At least it can't detect the true size. I don't like NERO and tend to use WinOnCD and CloneCD. WinOnCD should display the capacity of the CD correct IF the burner can handle it.
So I'll check it as soon as my T42p arrives.

Cool! Thanks! Let me know then.
Did you order a 14 inch screen T42p? I hated it at first, wanted a 15 inch one, but this one is great! So small and light and kind of girly.

A girly Notebook.... *GRIN* ... well, yes, I ordered the 14" because I wanted to have a small and light Notebook. 1400*1050 is a nice resolution - I saw a notebook with that resolution in our company already - and I did not want to enlarge the whole thing just to have a bigger and heavier display.

i love the size of 14"(had T30) but the issue is 1400x1050 is barely useable for me.. So i go for 15" 1600x1200. it is bit heavier..

I did not forget your question....
I recieved my T42p 2373-GXG on monday and tested the 99min CD-R today. The RecordNow! Software can't detect the full capacity of the CD

It reads out just 79min 57sec or 703MB available space.
I'll try another burning software and report back. But right now I'd say that it can't handle CDs > 700MB.

Sorry I forgot a bit about this thread..
I called IBM and asked if the drive supports 800 MB CDs and this guy said "oh, i'm just a student, i don't really know, but the guy that repairs the computers THINKS it doesn't support them... Better bring the computer over."
??? Really impressed with their help! Maybe it happens just in my coutry..
So looks like it doesn't support it (I tries as well but Nero didn't recognize it as a 800 MB CD although I set all thi things I was supposed to) but do you think it can be fixed with a firmware? Is there a firmware for this kind of drive? (The guy at IBM didn't know of course.)
Thanks,
Petra
