Rescue and Recovery

#1 Post by dg » Fri Jan 04, 2008 7:27 pm

I have RnR 3.1, and I notice there is v4.1 available. It hasn't come up on System Update, and Lenovo don't include the T41 in their list of supported systems. see

ftp://ftp.software.ibm.com/pc/pccbbs/th ... 1_315c.txt

They do say:
"This version of Rescue and Recovery may also work with other systems that meet
the system requirements. However, no testing has been done with these systems
and no support is provided for using Rescue and Recovery on any system other
than those listed as a "Supported system". "

Is there any good reason not to update?

----------------
Also, I am running short of disk space, and I notice that I have 2 folders of over 200MB each for RnR in C:\drivers\
tvtrnr31_1022en (my current version) and tvtrnr31_1017en , while RnR is installed in C:\ProgramFiles\Lenovo (where there is also a 440MB iso file for some reason - I always backup to a separate HD).
I can delete all the RnR stuff before I install the update, but can I then safely delete any new RnR stuff that might appear in C:\drivers ?

And there are so many folders in Drivers with names which mean nothing to me, e.g. IGA239WW. There's 1.5 GB in 5130 files in 1083 folders. A lot of them contain setup programs. How can I find out which ones I can safely delete?

Have I posted this second question in the right place?

Thanks for any advice.
Danny

Wecome to my nightmare. RnR 4.1 doesnt work on T41, and I have 42 GB's of a 60GB drive left after a RnR. It's all way too Pathetic!

I wish there was way a to kill the useless partitions without having to rebuild this PC, again.

There is a way to delete the Rescue and Recovery partition, as discussed in many threads on this forum, e.g. Making Recovery CDs and removing hidden partition and Delete partition or not? and got recovery disks - should i delete rapid restore? and Removing the hidden partition - all which, and many more, are easily found if searching for ”delete recovery” in the T4x forum.

Alternatively, get Acronis True Image (free 15-day full-working trial version), make a backup of your NTFS C-drive (excl, of course, the FAT32 R&R partition), unhide the R&R partition in the BIOS, reformat the entire C-drive, restore your backup, and that’s it!

By the way, you seem to be confused (?) about "decimal" Gigabytes versus "binary" Gigabyes: A HDD sold as ”60 GB” will hold 60 GB if counted in ”decimal bytes”, but only 60 GB/2^30 = 55,88 GB if counted in ”binary bytes” (and as reported by e.g. Windows). This is one of the "Top 10" FAQ’s on all HDD verdors sites; see e.g. Storage Capacity Measurement Standards (by Seagate) or Why does my hard drive report less capacity than indicated on the drive's label? or My drive does not show its full capacity. (Samsung) or Why is my drive displaying a smaller than expected capacity than the indicated size on the drive label? (Western Digital).

So, your ”60 GB” HDD is actually 55.8 GB, and R&R takes up further 4.3 GB (as far as I recall). Then, after that, you have Windows and your own programs and data, so the remaining free space you mention – 42 GB – doesn’t seem that strange (low) to me!

Now you know all is most likely OK! :-)

Best regards,

Johan

Frank,

After Johan's reply, do you still think that RnR 4.1 doesn't work on your T41, or is it just that it takes up more space than you would like? Did v3.1 work any better?

Thanks for your information.

I had RnR V4.1 running fine on my T30, so I don't see why it shouldn't work on a T4x.

Regarding the "supported system" list, that just refers to machines they've tested it with. My T30 is unsupported ... doesn't mean it's not going to work, it just means I cannot raise any problems related to the product, as I'm running on a configuration that Lenovo don't officially recognise.

I've tested the pre-desktop area from both F11 and a bootable CD and all works fine. I should add that I have deleted my recovery partition.

Note: The latest version of RnR is 4.20, came out in December 2007. That's what I'm now running.

It has been a while since I did this, and I have few machines, so I can't recall with certainy, but I could sware that there was less drive space after I did an RnR using the RnR's "restore to factory contents" as opposed to using the the restore disks.

Maybe I am tripping.

Do the newer RnR's have any advantages such as updated files? (XP updates, etc.)

The "C:\drivers" folder can safely be deleted.

It is created by the setup files downloaded from IBM/Lenovo. The installation files are extracted there and then, after installation (during which they are copied to the final places like "C:\Program Files") the middle point ("C:\drivers" folder) is not needed anymore.

Thanks Yak,
I've now deleted the contents of this folder (saving it all temporarily elsewhere, just in case) & evertything is still working OK.
