T41 problem

#1 Post by bobditty » Sun Jan 06, 2008 5:13 pm

First of all, my warranty was up on 12/11/07 so I get no support there.

Not sure if this is T41 related or not so please move if need be.

Problem, cannot boot up. I get the screen with the following error:
STOP: 0xC0000221 unknown hard error
C:\Winnt\System32\Ntdll.dll

Can't boot up in safe mode or go back to last good configuration. It just goes back to those choices and none of the choices work.

Any ideas? I do not have the IBM diagnostic cds either. Any ideas how to get that. I bought this T41 used and have been LOVING it. I did buy my wife a new X61 but it came with vista and don't think I can use that cd. Please let me know what I can do. Thanks!

It is NT Layer DLL, and is part of Windows - not unique to the ThinkPad. It sounds like something has hosed your installation. That could be the hard drive (going out) or motherboard failing (T4x flex problem). ... JDH

Create a bootable PC-Doctor CD on your wifes machine and boot it up in the T41. Just make sure the CDROM drive is first in boot order in BIOS. Run all of the diagnostics.

I suggest this:

1) Download PC Doctor for DOS bootable CD - ThinkPad - via your wife's X61, and burn the program on a CD. Boot up on that CD, run PC Doctor, and see if it report any error(s).

2) If you have a Windows XP CD, then try boot up on that and make a Windows Repair.

3) If this all fails, put your existing HDD in an external USB-box (get one for as low as $10), and grab your user data onto your wife's X61.

Then... take the big step:

4) If no errors are found, go to the Marketplace of this forum, and put up a "WTB (want to buy) advertisement for a tset of Rescue & Recovery Media - I guess they are available for something like $20-25. You may also find them on eBay. Reinstall everything.

By the way, many suggestions for how to cure "0xC0000221 unknown hard error" comes up if Googling for that - incl. on the Microsoft Help and Support pages.

EDIT: Oh, Harry, you were faster on the keyboard than I! :-)

BR,

Johan

Ok, I ran this and it came up with no errors. Looks like hard drive, etc are fine

So, its probably a windows problem then? I don't have a Win XP disk (as my other pc came with Vista). I see alot of rescue type of disks on Ebay. Is there one specifically that i could get for the IBM (maybe that loads all the IBM Thinkvantage software, etc)?

Thanks! I really appreciate your help on this!

Start a thread on the Marketplace forum and ask for a full set of T41 XP Pro R&R discs. Expect to pay $25 or less.
