#1 Post by ThinkPad » Sun Nov 21, 2004 7:56 pm

I just recieved a T30 thinkpad as a gift. Im relatively new to thinkpads (coming from a powerbook) can someone give me some insight on this machine. What are the specs? is it a good machine? I love the sleekness of the new T42s but this seems to be able to do the job.

I have the 2366 type, how old it is?
Is it possible to replace the keyboard? i want to get that crisp typing feeling again. I can tell this has been used quite a bit.
Sorry for the mutliple questions, I might as well ask altogether to get respondes from you guys.

Thanks

P.S I know of the search function

The T30 is a good machine. You can certainly replace the keyboard if you wish. Call IBM with the machine model and serial, tell them the hard drive died, and you need recovery CD's. They are worth paying for if you have to. Then consider re-imaging it cleanly. If you are so inclined, put a super fast 60Gb 7200-rpm hard drive in it. It will smooth out and increase performance (been there, done that).

Then go to
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... country=us
put in the model type and review all the upgraded drivers you need. If you have never done this, post again, and we can help you through the process. Is it XP Pro? If so you need all the new drivers to be SP2 compliant. If it is Windows 2000, you want to get it to SP4.

Let us know a bit about it (2366-XXX and OS), and people will respond with assistance. ... JDHurst

Thanks for the information. According to that site, here are the details on my machine

Product: ThinkPad T30 2366-XXZ [change]

Operating system: Windows XP [change]

Original description: Based on 2672-86U: P4-M 2.0GHz (512KB), 256MB RAM, 40.0GB HDD, 14.1 XGA(1024x768) TFT LCD, 8x-3.3x DVD-ROM, Modem(CDC), Ethernet(LOM), UltraNav, Li-Ion battery, WinXP Pro

Not bad, the only complaint I have is the battery does not seem to last long. Is there a place I can get a longer lasting battery?

What will I need to do to replace my hardrive to the 60 gb one? Will I have to do any system configuration? OS setup?
Also can I replace the keyboard myself or is that something I have to send it in for?

And how about the notoriously failing planar boards?

You can replace the keyboard yourself (four screw underneath release it). Get the hardware maintenance manual on-line. Replacing the hard drive is a snap (undo the screw and pull it out). But you do need the recovery CD's (which I why I suggested). And if your machine blows the memory slot (notorious faulty planar board), there is now an engineering fix to permanently fix it. The only hitch here is warranty, but according to the support page, it probably is still under warranty. ... JDHurst

Read the FAQ before asking any more questions, it answers a lot of them.

Welcome aboard. Also a T30 owner. Difference is that mine doesn't have the slide pad...only the Trackpoint. If you need any more help, you're welcome to send me an IM.
Good luck!
