Anyone had their LCD replaced by IBM?
I like to know people's experience with LCD replacements, after their 30day of purchase. Got some intermittent grey areas on the bottom of my LCD, and I still have 2 years of warranty. Because of where I live, IBM will likely tell me to go to a local certified shop to get it replaced.

Had mine replaced a couple of months ago. There are some white spot caused by touchpad, I guess.
IBM partener regarded this as a defect, and wanted to offer me free replacement, but IBM tended to claim it's a user damage. Because my unit is very clean, IBM finally gave up and had my LCD replaced free of charge. But then something wrong with some of the indicator below the LCD, and it took me almost a month to had it repaired by IBM partener.
And now, the white spot appears again...

The white spots are completely "normal". When they appear, push the middle blue scroll button. They will go away. They are some kind of "artifact" or whatever it's called seemingly caused by the ultra nav drivers. They seem to happen on everyones. Push the middle scroll button, and they just go away.

I'm probably going to have my LCD replaced by IBM too. I noticed a darkening of the LCD above the NUM and CAPS LOCK led's. It's not a normal shape either (and barely noticeable).
Good thing I have the thinkpad protection plan

My experience was a couple of days. But I guess it would depend on the service center you took it to and if IBM has the part.JaimitoBond wrote:How long was this enitre process? 1-2 weeks or a month? Thanks.eriqesque wrote:I had a T40 that developed white spots.
Took it to a local warranty repair shop.
They ordered the LCD from IBM parts and Installed it. No problem
You could also EasyServ it and that should also only be a couple of days.

These are different white spots than the trackpoint pixel.Plinkerton wrote:The white spots are completely "normal". When they appear, push the middle blue scroll button. They will go away. These aren't pixels. It's a much larger area that is just brighter. very annoying however and completly abnormal.

Well, I just got my LCD back from IBM to replace the LCD; there was some hair pieces INSIDE the LCD cover - don't laugh, it was really annoying having those 'eyelashes' staring back at me.
After a very quick turnaround time (one day), I'm happy to report that the 'new' LCD looks pretty good.
BUT, I noticed that my LCD latch was not springing back the way it should have; I basically would have to push the latch to the right to open (and it would stay there) and push it back to lock the LCD lid. I reasoned that the spring must have broken so I was going to send the notebook back to IBM but I decided to open up the LCD cover (I'm pretty good at taking apart DELL notebooks). I found that the tech basically didn't re-assemble the latch mechanism correctly and jammed the spring so it couldn't spring back.
Needless to say, I'm not too impressed with IBM's 'legendary' service. This is my first IBM (23733VU) after using DELL for the past three years. This was a pretty amateurish mistake and would have cost IBM another trip back to the shop.

Was this work done by EasyServe or a local affliated computer repair shop??cj3209 wrote:Well, I just got my LCD back from IBM to replace the LCD; there was some hair pieces INSIDE the LCD cover - don't laugh, it was really annoying having those 'eyelashes' staring back at me.

Not sure what Easy Serve is but this was work done after contacting IBM Atlanta Tech Service.
It's actually no big deal; people make mistakes. I was just surprised at how simple the mistake was to fix.
It still beats the pants off of any DELL notebook.
I especially like the keyboard, keyboard light, sturdiness of the lcd housing, and overall stability of the notebook in general. It's got a certain 'quality' about it that almost every notebook out there doesnt' seem to have and I've used DELL, HP, Gateway, Compaq, Apple, and Fujitsu.
Cheers!

I have a T23 that has a dim screen. It is still usable but compared to a new xga non-flex T42, the T23 has this dull, yellowish tint when displaying white.
The machine is relatively new and still has 13 months remaining on its original 3yr warranty. Full brightness on the T23 is about 1-2 bars on the T42.
How dim does the screen have to be until IBM will replace it?

Wow, that sounds exactly like the dull screen on my new R51 15" xga. I plan on taking it to the service center pretty soon and seeing what they can do. I am extremely busy with my business this Christmas season and I have already transferred my work environment to my laptop so this won't be easy if they want to hold on to it for a few days.califas wrote:I have a T23 that has a dim screen. Keep us up to date on what you do with your laptop.
