I just ran a very graphic intense game on my T42p and was watching the cpu and gpu temp rise to about 81c!

The CPU should be rated to 100 C, so 81 C isn't that bad for heavy CPU/GPU load.
You could try undervolting the CPU to bring down temps a bit (reduced mine by 10-15 C under load) but that won't help with GPU temps (can break 100 C on my machine with a torture test).

A thin layer should be all you need. Both the heatsink and the CPU must be cleaned with alcohol or ArctiClean. Then you can "rub" a very thin layer into the heatsink surface using a ziploc over your finger or something similar, and you can put a tiny dot on the CPU (no bigger than 1/8" around). If you've already applied it correctly, you can try cleaning the fan and heatsink of any dust bunnies.
Undervolting might be a good idea. I haven't tried it, but NHC is supposed to work pretty well.

The PM 760 2.0Ghz can run up to 85C in my T43, which still seems to be lower than the highest GPU temperature I've ever seen. But I've never experienced a system shut down due to the high temperature. (I did on a T60p.)
I don't think you should worry about your PM 765. After all, it's the a high-end CPU.

Thanks for the info. I upgraded from a 1.8ghz 745 which probably hit 65c max under a hard load. I read that the 765 runs warmer but I can cook eggs now.
The heat really doesn't bother me, I just hope im not doing any internal damage by running it so hot.
Im thinking of getting one of those cooling bases for when I use graphic intense software.

I don't think a temperature of 81 C will cause any permanent damage. As I stated before, the thermal spec on the CPU for continual operation is up to 100 C according to Intel.
I have tried one of those cooling pads with fans; I found it made absolutely no difference in any reported internal temperatures. Those pads may be good for keeping your sperm count up if you use the machine on your lap but they don't seem to cool the laptop's interior at all (in my experience)
However, undervolting my P-M 760 with NHC resulted in dramatic decreases in CPU temperature with no system instability. Sadly, there is no simple way to undervolt the GPU, though I have yet to get any overtemperature shutdowns of my system.

Out of curiosity, what fan speed (in rpm) is reported? NHC always states mine as ~2900 regardless of fan level.

I've been running the 780 2.26Ghz for a couple of days now. It does run much hotter than the 760 2.00Ghz, however I can easily feel the performance increase. Maybe it's because my CPU is often 100% occupied.
So far the highest temperature I've ever seen is 82C, with the fan at full speed (about 4000 RPM), and it's not summer yet.
After the CPU swap, I find the most noticeable difference is not the maximum operating temperature but the accelerating time. Under normal CPU usage, I would say the 780 is only about 5C hotter than the 760. However the 780 can get very hot in just a few seconds, while it took some time for the 760 to do so.

Here my temps:
Power settings set to maximum performance in XP, and then left doing nothing at all:
CPU: 52 C
GPU: 50 C
Under VERY heavy load. And I mean playing Crysis in the most graphic intense part of the game, (on this low end laptop):
CPU: 93 C
GPU: 92 C
And I played for 45 mins with CPU temp constant between 89 - 93.
And it was still running stabile.. Tested theese temps 1 hour ago.
It is things like this that makes me fall in love with my Thinkpad all over again

Actually I also have a 14" T60p, which has a T2600 and a FireGL V5200 card. The CPU seems fine but the GPU runs pretty hot. I've experienced some random shutdowns while playing Doom3 (I always enable the GOD mode then rape my enemies with a chain saw, which I think would use a lot of graphics.)
I've suspected the shutdowns are caused by the overheating. Just one question, how do you monitor the temperatures while playing?
