External LCD via DVI on Thinkpad dock

#1 Post by csarrasin » Sat May 29, 2004 6:40 am

Hi there,

First an appology, I am aware that this topic has been discussed before but somehow I can't find the posts that relate to it

I've just ordered a nice T42p (2373-KTU) from Bill. I also have an ageing Thinkpad dock (I) which I originally bought for my A20p a few years back (my current machine is a T30)... and I am contemplating buying a Viewsonic VP201b LCD monitor, which supports a native resolution of 1600x1200.

My question is simple (and I guess it's likely to become a common one with the prices of decent spec LCDs falling): will the combination T42p+Dock I+Viewsonic work out of the box and allow me to enjoy 1600x1200 via DVI.

I seem to remember that it's not possible and I have also read that using analogue VGA will result in crappy/blurry output...

I also seem to remember that there are some driver hacks that will make it possible but I'm wondering how these hacks would affect things like general performance or battery life.

Please enlighten me...

Regards,
Christian

This mobility modder works perfectly with ThinkPads. It modifies the original ATI installiation file so the ATI driver can be installed. It support many other features the IBM ATI driver doesn't, for example the 1600x1200 resolution via DVI. The performance will be slightly better . Power consumption is not an issue.

Christian:

I do not think you can connect T42 to Dock I (assuming Dock I stands for the original Dock 2000). I have a T41p (obtained from Bill). I could not mount it to the Dock I. The connector positions are different.

Ah, sorry, I just checked IBM's documentation at ftp://ftp.software.ibm.com/pc/pccbbs/op ... 2p1837.pdf and what I called the 'Dock I' is actually the Thinkpad 'Port replicator' (I)...
