Hibernate & Wireless

#1 Post by ssmith » Mon Nov 22, 2004 12:18 pm

I'm a wireless newbie, so this may be an easy question.

I've set up a wireless network at home with a Linksys G-router (WRT54G v.2) and my T42 (2378-FVU). I've also set up the Linksys router to use MAC filtering and "WPA pre-shared key" encryption.

Everything works great, except I run into one issue: I use hybernation instead of shutting down, and when I try using wireless the following day later, I am unable to use the broadband connection. Now I know that this is due to the router expiring my old IP session (and my T42 attempting to use this expired connection due to hybernation), but even if I successfully re-scan and reconnect the wireless connection (via Access Connections), it still doesn't allow a browser to access the broadband connection. Ultimately, I'm forced to reboot the T42, then everything is fine.

Is there a way to release my wireless info once I've come back from a day of hibernation? Or is rebooting my only option? I thought re-scanning for the wireless network and re-establishing a connection would solve it, but it doesn't.

Thanks in advance and let me know if I need to clarify anything above.

Try disconnecting before you hibernate. Use Access Connections to disconnect, then hibernate. Upon starting up again, use Access Connections to connect. Might work. That is different than letting the connection expire.

I have had varied success with hibernation and eventually found it easier to shutdown and restart. This is mostly because I was changing connection environments (different physical locations) pre- and post-hibernation cycle. ... JDHurst

That's quite odd. My specs of my router and ThinkPad are pretty much the same as yours, and I hibernate all the time, and wake up from hibernating with no issues whatsoever. It just connects without me doing anything, and it's always been this way. This is my 3rd T42, and they have all acted the same way.

I find it a bit strange that you have issues with this matter, as mine have always been perfect.

Well, it's probably something stupid that I'm doing that I haven't recognized yet. I purchased my T42 in early November and it came preloaded with SP2. No real problems, it's just annoying. I also hunted down router firmware updates for the router after I wrote my first post, so this may be the cause. I'll post my results once I've updated the firmware.

Thanks for the replies!

EDIT: Forgot to mention, this is by far the best laptop I've ever used. Now that I'm spoiled, I'll never settle for less!
