T40 Video gone bonkers

#1 Post by Otter » Fri Jan 11, 2008 8:02 am

Bonkers is the technical term, I believe.

When I power on the system, I get seemingly colorful and random stripes and patterns that change as the system boots.

It seems to load Windows, etc, but it's totally scrambled video.

Any option to repair other than a motherboard swap?

Is it possible to get a p-style motherboard for the 2373-92U (14", SXGA+)?

Oh well...if you know how to re-flow the solder around GPU, or someone who can do it for you, you might skip a mobo replacement.

And, yes, the boards from 14" T4xP models will fit in your cage.

Good luck.

Next question. Anyone know how to get the video on T40 to go to an external monitor without being able to see the lcd?

I believe that the Fn+F7 brings up a menu, rather than just changing it. Can't see the menu...

Edit: nevermind.. Fn+F7 finally worked. Definately the GPU, not the screen.

It's possible, but I think a motherboard replacement is in order. I think the GPU is bad - not the solder connections.

Actually, you could try it out... The heat guns are not expensive and you've certainly got nothing to loose.

Before you do anything..look under the hood and try putting some pressure on the GPU. If a little bit of pressure on one of the corners of the GPU appears to fix the issue, then it is the GPU reflow issue...there are some short term bandaids that you can use by keeping pressure on the chip with the keyboard back in place...but ultimately, it is either a motherboard replacement or new laptop...

good luck
