Dead T40?

I was using the computer when it froze all of a sudden. I had to hard reboot (Power btn for 10 sec.). The problem is that the computer would not boot after shutting it off. All I heard was a very faint noise like a spark, and the battery light would shut off. If I took the battery out and unplugged it for a few seconds, and plugged it back in, I would be able to reproduce this "spark". This happens regardless if the battery is in or not. Here's the thing: every once in a while, the computer would actually turn on, but would never reach the bios stage, so nothing actually happens. What could be the problem?

- What happens if you plug in only the mains? - No battery
- What happens if you connect the battery only? (Assuming there is power in it)
- Have you tried another mains adaptor?

Remote possibility, power surge?

The same thing happens (sounds like a spark) regardless if the battery is connected or not. The only difference is that if the battery is connected w/ the a/c adapter plugged in, the battery light turns green, and blinks once every couple of seconds. If I try to turn the computer on, I hear the "spark" and the battery light turns off competely and the computer won't respond. I haven't tried another adapter because I don't have one, but it behaves the same on battery alone, so I don't think the adapter plays a role in this.
