Putting back the "y" key onto the keyboard

#1 Post by johnfluke » Mon Jan 14, 2008 7:11 pm

Hey all,

For some reason, my 'y' key on the keyboard fell off of my T41. I have all three pieces (the key, a plastic U-shaped piece, and a rectangular plastic piece), but can't seem to figure out how to put them back together to put onto the keyboard. If anyone can provide any help, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

Welcome to thinkpads.com!

I'm not sure if your T41 keyboard uses the same type of keys as I have documented on this site:

but from your descriptions of the pieces you have, it might be close.

I appreciate the help, but those are different. Both plastic pieces are black and the rectangular thing fits inbetween the u-shaped piece somehow. I'm not sure.

It may not quite be like it but it is very similar. You should be aiming to assemble your pieces into the second to last picture linked by rkawakami. The parts for the 'y' key will be "sideways" compared to that picture, basically rotated 90 degrees.

Main thing to watch out for is the last step mentioned, if you push too hard the little tabs on the bottom of the key can break.

I found that when replacing keys, they go on by sliding them into position from the direction of the rear of the keyboard (i.e. screen). The other thing is that I think they come off if you use a 'sliding' action when pressing keys, rather than vertical; long nails don't help either -which is how I reckon my daughters key tops keep coming off.
