T42p-making strange sounds and random times-see details...

#1 Post by jaykay » Mon Nov 22, 2004 11:51 pm

My t42p 2373 7XU is brand new - about 1 month old - but lately I have noticed it makes sounds like a spinning disc drive that last for 5 to 10 seconds at random moments (i.e. when I'm surfing on the internet, when the computer is in sleep mode, when I'm tying in word). Have anyone of you experienced this? Should I call IBM and try to return it? It is so annoying!!

I am not sure that it is the noise from HD or not. I have 2379-R9U (60GB 7200RPM). My HD make noise every time when HD Header needs to access the data. If I remember correctly, i read about this somewhere from IBM site: IBM says it is normal for ticking sound from HD.

Could it be the fan?

Try hibernating it rather than sleeping it - in sleep a lot of stuff is still powerd up and generating heat.
