Maximum memory for a T41

#1 Post by sadt41guy » Thu Jan 17, 2008 8:21 am

I have a relatively old ThinkPad T41 (model 2373-TG5 to be more exact). I currently have 1.5GB of memory. I've had the machine (and been happy with it!) for several years and I couldn't even remember what the exact memory config is, so I looked in the slot that is easily accessed underneath, and I see that I have a 1GB "optional" memory card, so that means that I must have 500MB on the main board(?).

My applications today are memory starved, so I'd like to increase the memory. Reading IBM/Lenovo sites, it certainly seems that my model can have up to 2GB of memory. So my question is relatively simple:
Can I change the 500MB memory chip that is I presume on the motherboard to a 1GB memory chip???
I've looked through the IBM/Lenovo web site and the manuals for my group of machines (T41/T41P), and I just don't find a clear answer. Is it possible to really attain 2GB in this machine? If so, how?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Yes, 2gb is possible. There is another slot under the keyboard, where the 512 stick is.

unscrew the 3 screws on the bottom for the keyboard and then lift it out... you'll see the 512MB stick there, replace that one with the 1GB you have under the bottom and put the 512MB back into the easier slot on the bottom. When you get your 1GB stick then you can easily swap it :) (that's if you don't already have it :) and want to take the trouble to do it now instead of all at once)

That's a 14" model. There are 4 keyboard screws.

Manuals for your T41 can be found at ThinkPad T41 2373-TG5 - select User's guides and manuals which will take you --> here. The most detailed user manual is the Hardware Maintenance Manual - ThinkPad T40, T40p, T41, T41p, T42, T42p.

There are also a number of movies (!) which shows how to e.g. install this or that; see them here --> Hardware removal and installation - ThinkPad T40/p, T41/p, T42/p, T43/p.

Specs for (most US-) T41 models are found in the ltwbook - the title of this being: "Personal Systems Reference, Lenovo ThinkPad Notebooks, 2007 to present - withdrawn (December 2006 - Version 332)" - it includes both T41/p's, T42/p's, and T43/p's). Looking there (on page 71) you will see that T41's can hold 2 GB max7 (PC2700 333 MHz DDR1 / non-parity / CL2.5). In the USA a 1 GB PC2700 high-quality stick of RAM (Crucial) today cost around $60 (see link to Newegg in the thread WTB: 2x 1GB DDR PC2700 SODIMM RAM - the post of Thu Jan 17, 2008 8:16 am).

Best regards,

Johan

YES! You were all correct. I found the 500MB memory chip under the keyboard, changed it for 1GB, and my T41 is working like a champ!

Thanks so much to all of your for the incredibly quick and good advice. I love forums!
