T40 lcd replacement

#1 Post by rook » Sat Jan 19, 2008 8:18 pm

Welcome

i'm first time on this forum, and i'm new to thinkpad, so welcome all.

I've T40 model 2373-75G, it has 14,1" XGA LCD and i want to replace them into SXGA+, for example LTN141P2-L02.
Is that possible? If not witch non-IBM lcd parts are available to work with my thinkpad?

Yes it's possible. At the very least you will need a new LCD cable, as the cables for XGA and SXGA+ are different.

Cable is 91P6787. The inverter is the same. There is no good information available about compatibility for different panels, even if they are both thinkpads. For example T40 and R51 have the same motherboard connectors with the same pin arrangement. The cables and panels look similar, but the connector arrangements are different on the panel and the different cables make up for it. If you mix and match, it won't work and some combinations fry the motherboard

Here you go...

As for the inverter, I think as long as the screen size is the same you'll be okay.

Well I see richk beat me to it. I'm on dial-up looking for this stuff.

Probably, but the cheapest and easiest way to do it IMHO would be to check eBay for screens pulled from dead systems, i.e. motherboard failures. That way you know it will work. There are plenty of IBM LCD's on eBay.

I have done this - put an SXGA screen into a system with the ATI Radeon 7500. It works great.

I have several new screens for sale along with the cable.

As I said earlier, there isn't much info around on swapping LCDs between laptop brands. (Those screens are all Toshiba and Dell) The screens are not interchangable, like VGA monitors are. There are 2 sizes of connector on the back of the panel and there is no standard on where the connector is mounted. The connector must be in exactly the right place to meet the flat ribbon cable. There is also no standard on pin order, so some "wrong screens" will cook the motherboard. If you want to exeriment, I would love to hear your results.

@ rook:

I suggest you have a look in the thread Pimp my T41p as it contain a good bit of information about swapping displays on T4x ThinkPad's. You can find much more (highly useful!) information on this forum if you use the Search function (try e.g. search in for "xga sxga" and restrict your search to the T4x forum).

Best regards,

Johan
