T42 Stutters

#1 Post by BobA » Sun Jan 20, 2008 12:17 am

Hello all - I have a serious problem with a T42 I am preparing to sell. (T42, 1.7GHz, 2G, 100G/7200rpm HD, 802.11bg WiFi)

The mouse, audio, keyboard all 'stutter' .. they stall and then pick up again after a fraction of a second. I can move the mouse around and see it 'stutter' every 1-4 seconds (not consistent in rhythm). They all stutter at the same time, so it's one thing that's causing everything to stutter. Is it a specific piece of hardware that's causing the problem? Or is it the motherboard itself (shudder)?

More info:
A: I'm running XP Pro clean install (I even swapped hard-drives - no change). Therefore I don't think it's software related.
B: It doesn't happen when I'm in Rescue & Recovery .. smooth as silk there.
C: It gets FAR worse when I have something else running (CPU or internet web browsing) - sometimes to the point that I can't do anything with the mouse until the process completes.
D: Changing out the CPU didn't affect it at all.

Things I haven't tried but thought of as I'm writing this post:
A: Swap out memory
B: Remove the WiFi

Any thoughts out there?

It's the WiFi - Intel Pro 2200bg.

I will changed out the memory and removed the WiFi - no stutter.

I reconnected the WiFi - I get the stutter.

Does anybody know whether there are settings that need to be changed? Or do I have a bad WiFi card?

It could be the card itself or the driver.

Here is how I would go about it: try borrowing-downloading or whatever a "live" Linux CD, and see whether the machine "stutters" while running a different OS.

If yes, you need a new card.

If no, you may want to uninstall and reinstall the drivers to see whether that helps.

Good luck.

I don't have a Linux boot CD but will search one out.

I did replace the card with another card. All was well until the card became active (got a good driver installed). Now, the stutter is back and almost seems worse.

I'm beginning to think I have a PCI issue on the motherboard (but I will try with Linux). Is anything like that common?
