T43 Keyboard Screws

#1 Post by billp117 » Mon Jan 21, 2008 2:39 am

I picked up a T43 that is in OK shape. I upgraded the memory and noticed the keyboard screws are really tight. When I replaced the screws they were even more tight and one of them seemed cross threaded. I know that new posts and screws would fix the problem. But, since this is under warranty...would IBM replace the keyboard...or just the screws and posts? I have replaced one screw with a shorter length screw that is holding for now.

Advice?

Can you replace the posts on the keyboard?

I think they just screw into place. I will check another keyboard before I tear the T43 apart.

I use a 2mm X .4mm tap and a tap handle to repair the posts.

Great advice...I got the 2mm tap, new non coated philips screws, and a new screwdriver model Wiha 2610 PHOx50. The tap cleaned out the threads just fine. The new screws went in like butter.

I was able to turn the tap with my fingers. When I got my T43 back from Repair they installed the old screws and they were a #%## to get out. The tools cost about $15 and the screws were free.

Thanks for the advice...Bill
